IVF stimulation

Dear All.

I am new to IVF. I absolutely have no idea how the stimmulation and the egg collection works and what to expect. When I spoke to my doctor he said that for IVF he will collect the eggs when I ovulate( because my body will choose naturally the eggs) and also he will put me on stimmulation too. Does it mean that they will collect the eggs when I ovulate in one cycle and the other cycle will be stimmulation? So the egg collection will over 2 months? Xx

Hi Madeline welcome 🤗 I think what he is saying is he will stimulate your body prior to ovulation as this increases the number of eggs you produce that month for egg collection (we normally only produce one but when stimulated I produced 13). They then collect the eggs. How long they stimulate you for and how many eggs they retrieve is really individual so best to ask you doctor for more clarity (ask loads and loads of questions ☺️ It’s there job too make sure we know exactly what’s happening to our bodies!) in the mean time though here’s a wee link to a summary of what happens nyulangone.org/locations/fe...

Thank Hun. When we had a online consultation with my doctor I forgot to ask some questions. My mind went blank. I need to make another appointment for another consultation though xx

During the cycle, your ovaries will be stimulated in the first half to make lots of follicles. This starts just after you have had a bleed so will be similar to the first half of your natural cycle but instead of you having one follicle the idea is to get lots. When you have several large ones identified on a scan, usually about 1-2 weeks after you start the stimulation, they will trigger you with medication to make you ovulate these several follicles, then collect eggs 36 hours later. If you have a fresh transfer, the fertilised embryo/blastocyst goes back in 3 or 5 days after egg collection. It is all done in one cycle. Some protocols (called long protocol) you start different medication about 1 week before you expect your period to make your ovaries and uterus basically shut down temporarily as it can help with the stimulation phase (called downregulation). In short protocols you start your stimulation meds a couple of days after your period with no downregulation.

Check out theduff.co.uk for all things IVF as it has some great explanations on there xx
