Hi all,

I had my trigger on Saturday and egg collection on Monday. I’ve been really tender and felt like I’ve been blowing up since.

After talking to my nurse I was advised to go to a&e today to get checked out. The hospital did scans and bloods etc. My ovaries are swollen to the point she couldn’t do an internal scan and there is some fluid. However the doctor seemed to think it was all ok.

I’m going to my clinic on Saturday (it should be transfer day) however, being in this much discomfort / pain is really not fun. Any suggestions of what to do to help ease it. I’ve been told to drink water but I’m drinking so much water I honestly think anymore would add to the discomfort and nausea.

Some practical advice of what’s helped others would be really appreciated.

Hi, sorry you aren't feeling good! I've previously been hospitalised with OHSS and it's definitely not fun at all! Glad you went to get checked out, definitely go back if you are feeling any worse.

You're actually not supposed to drink plain water from what I have been told. Stick to sports drinks, coconut water, soup, or dioralyte. I definitely wouldn't overload on fluid as it can make bloating much worse. Hope you feel better soon xx

I did say to the doctor I felt like the water wasn’t helping because it felt like it was blowing me up! Also, not plain water makes sense. I felt like I was being daft.

I totally understand! My clinic doctor was very unhelpful and dismissive until I went to the A&E very unwell. The hospital doctor admitted he hadn't even seen or treated OHSS before so they obviously don't all know that much xx

I got the feeling they weren’t sure and might not have seen it much if at all.

Take things easy, gentle walks etc.Skyr (high in protein) , lie on your left side and sadly yes drink the water. The protein the the skyr will really help.

I reduced my fluids by half within 2 days and was able to get my transfer last time despite the consultant thinking it would be a no go as I had so much fluid inside.

The consultant told me to have protein shakes, but the midwife pulled me aside and told me about the Skyr. I went with the midwife's suggestion ( I didn't want to particularly be downing down a lot of artificial stuff etc).

Skyr is a go to breakfast so will keep that up! Thank you for that tip.

I was downing it by the pot 😭😭. Used to have 300g with strawberries every day. First thing I went off after BFP but likely more me fed up with it than food aversion lol

I’ve had OHSS too and personally I would not go for transfer. I developed it after transfer and I was pregnant, I was bloated and I had shortness of breath. It would be better to give your body a little rest and go on your next cycle. I’m surprised they gave you the go ahead with it! I drank sports drink and it helped a bit! Good luck! x

Yeah my clinic haven’t set on transfer. They want me to go in and have the scan either way. The hospital I went to didn’t seem to have the same level of knowledge of what was what when I spoke to them. I think my clinic we assured I would be ok until they can see me but I don’t think they are going only on their word.

Our clinic cancelled the transfer after my wife's egg collection as she was at high risk of OHSS. Her symptoms started couple of days after collection and was not very pleasant for about a week! The nausea was the worse for it. Hope you start to feel better soon and get lots of rest!

OHSS is horrible! My doctor downplayed it both times with me, but wouldn't let me transfer. I couldn't walk properly for weeks and it took a long time to recover. I was told eat protein for every meal and drink lots of water, but I agree with others, sports drinks with electrolytes are better and skyr sounds like a great suggestion. I changed doctor and am now in the middle of a supported natural cycle to try and prevent OHSS.

Wishing you all the best and I hope it calms down so you can have the transfer, it's so frustrating having to wait.

Heya :) I had mild OHSS last egg retrieval - I was told we would judge in transfer day, if it all settled by then they’d transfer, if it seemed still risky they wouldn’t…. I was luckily ok for transfer but in the past I’ve had transfer cancelled and had to freeze all!

Advice , though counter intuitive, is to drink loads - 3-4 litres a day. Of water, coconut water, high electrolyte sport drinks and full fat milk. Then also try and eat plenty of protein (I second the skyr, also eggs / chicken etc).

I felt awful for 3 days but was miles better on day 4. Hope you feel better soon. x

It is a terrible feeling... I really struggled after my last egg collection... I was really unwell... They said I had fluid in my ovaries...They said not to go ahead with the transfer, which I have been really upset about at the time (as it was just another delay) but after I realised it was a great thing as I did struggle for awhile...

This wont be too useful but they gave me a medication to calm the ovaries down unfortunately I don't remember the name of it but I can look it up if you need it...

Hope you feel better soon and all the best with your transfer...

Sorry to hear you’re feeling so uncomfortable, it’s not nice, I had OHSS after my first egg collection, my clinic wouldn’t allow a fresh transfer and did a freeze all, which was disappointing but better in the long run because the HCG released if you do get pregnant makes OHSS significantly worse .I was told to drink at least 2-3 litres of water a day and 4 protein drinks a day (20-30g protein in each drink) The brand I buy is called UFIT. High protein intake and fluid replacement is essential, good luck!x

Thank you for the advice. Had no idea about the protein. I have a shake from before this started and I would be at the gym. Will have one of those today. The husband has already had a check of what we’ve got and where I can get more protein (I don’t eat much meat) I’m going to ask the at the scan tomorrow what they think is best and mention my concerns.

I developed OHSS and was admitted to hospital at 4 weeks pregnant. I am now 11 weeks and still suffering and still signed off work sick. Pregnancy makes the OHSS significantly worse, so if any chance you have it i would speak to the clinic about delaying the transfer and let your body recover.

I was told in hospital to drink only to thirst to reduce nausea and bloating (whereas clinic told me to drink as much as i could) so contracting advice out there, but i found drinking to thirst helped symptoms. And lots of protein

Thank you all again, I’ve noticed today that my problem is mostly on one side and the pain is actually all up my back on that side. The only other thing that’s felt like this is when I had keyhole surgery and they use the gas to pump you up.

Small meals of protein and also try sports drinks like Lucozade. Don’t over eat or over drink because you will feel worse. Make sure you make a note of how much you drink and check you are weeing lots too. I had mild ohss. I’m 9 and a half weeks pregnant and I still have one enlarged ovary and free fluid . My tummy is still swollen. It’s not fun! Hope you feel better soon. Make sure you keep on at the clinic if you feel really poorly. I persisted until they had me back in to scan me, do bloods and measure my tum. X
