Question egg retrieval and fertilisation ?

Yellowbellow1212 profile image

Hello everyone

I wanted to have an opinion. I am on my second round of IVF. Last IVF in September resulted in 8 eggs in retrieval and then 2 were fertilised but the day of transfer they told me I actually had 5 embryos (late fertilised) . Anyways none of the transfers worked. This time for the egg retrieval they had 16eme , 12 were mature enough to be fertilised . However they called me this morning so 24 h later and only 6 were fertilised . I don’t even know how many will make it to embryos. Is it normal to have such a gap between the number of eggs and the number fertilised ? Has anyone had later fertilised . I hope all of this makes sense… also I have done ERa test came back good . I am 30 nothing seems wrong so any advice would be so welcome

Anyways good luck to everyone !

Hi no advice as such but just wanted to share that we only got 6eggs at retrieval. They told us 24hrs later that 5 made it to fertilisation but sadly on transfer day they told us that we only had 1 viable to put back. As a lot of the other ladies told me at the time it only takes one. Lots of luck and baby dust xxx

Thank you for your encouraging answer. It’s draining all these numbers they give you that don’t really mean anything at the end… good luck to you !

I had 4 eggs retrieved all 4 mature all 4 fertilised. Ended up with 2. Transferred 1 ended in chemical and just about to transfer the last one. I roughly guess on 50% dropping off each stage but that’s not everyone’s outcome! Be positive you have good numbers. I will cross everything that they keep growing 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼💕

Thank you so much 😊. That was also what I calculated. Lots of prays your way ! 💕💕

We always had very low fertilisation rates due to my husband having very high DNA fragmentation in his sperm. When we tried donor sperm, the fertilisation rate tripled, so the issue was definitely the sperm

I had the same just recently, 14 eggs collected, only 6 fertilised. It was not what I was expecting at all. The clinic did say it was lower than expected but couldn't give a reason - we'll have a call with the consultant next week to discuss. They said they were leaving them under observation in case they showed signs of Fertilisation a bit later on that day, but that it was unlikely. I'm 36 and no known issues for either of us. But I had a lot of reassuring messages from other people on this site of both positive stories and encouragement that you only really need a good one! In the end, 5 out of my 6 made it to day 5. So it really doesn't mean that the few that fertilised cannot be of good quality either. It's a bit disappointing, I know, but hopefully things will still progress nicely over the next few days. All the very best to you xx

Thank you that does give me hope. It is frustrating plus last time they fertilised later. But you are totally right it is still a good number ! Hope everything goes nicely for you

Yellow, please don't worry, your numbers are great! We're 33, also had a lower 50% fertilisation, and ICSI. We still ended up with 3 good quality embryos. Here is what we had vs the average, according to the embryologist I spoke to.

Day 1: 14 eggs collected (average 15 to 20)

Day 2: 7 fertilised, 50% fertilisation (average is 70 to 80%)

Day 3: 4 top grade and 3 lesser grade

Day 5: 3 embryos

(30-50% make it from day 3 to day 5-blastocyst)

I second Charlton point though. Our consultant pointed to DNA fragmentation and we think we have sperm quality issues, which would explain lower fertilisation rate... The good news is that supplements like Impryl and Proceive can really help with that. Also, ICSI.

Good luck! I wish you the best.

Yes you are totally right this rollercoaster number makes you doubt and question rather abstract stuff.

As for the sperm last time out of the 7 or 8 eggs I had retrieved 5 got 3 day embryos and 4 5 day embryo so I don’t think that can be it

The problem could be sperm. Do DNA fragmentation test to confirm all is good on the other end.

Unless you do the DNA frag test, there is no way to tell if sperm is all good or not. All my clinics do that first because it's easy to rule out sperm issues. This way you know you aren't focusing on the wrong thing and wasting good eggs on bad sperm and undergoing multiple cycles with no results. Personally, I would want to know if I'm working with good sperm before subjecting myself to multiple invasive fertility treatments.

No I Know for sure. We did all of that and it came out as normal sperm ! So mystery !

I’ve always had quite a lot of eggs retrieved and embryos up to day 3 but then they have declined up to day 5. We have issues on both sides but to help you on my second round I had 25 embryos collected - day 3 15 were going good- day 5 only 2 had made it to blastocyst -1 embryo fresh transfer done and our daughter will now be 4 this coming December 😃 so for us only 8% of our collected eggs/embryos were good enough on day 5 x

Our first round we got 9 eggs, then on the day we were told my husband's sample was poor which was a shock as it had always been fine. So they said do ICSI (hadn't planned to). Only 4 fertilized which they said was on the low side for ICSI (they'd expect more like 60%). 2 made it to top quality 5 day blasts and one transferred and ended in a chemical. We asked why the poor sample result and fertilization and the consultant said if my OH had been ill - even a cold - 2-3months before (which he had had), that would have done it. We had a private round about 2months later, got 5 eggs, his sample was back to good (still did ICSI just in case) and all fertilized and made it to 5day blast. Doing ICSI we didn't have the option of later fertilization, but for us it was the sperm quality and I really wish we'd been warned as we would have delayed the first round a bit. x

We did directly ICSI because he had a lower sperm count mobility but first time around it worked pretty well although the first 24 hours only two were fertilised and then when I went for transfer actually three other had fertilised Late. So I was just surprised this time around with the number of eggs being higher that the fertilised number was lower. But this is a lot of numbers and speculations feels like playing in a good damn casino sometimes .. thank you for sharing it does help a lot ! Lots of luck your way

The numbers don't really mean anything as i fould out...My 2nd egg collection where we were expecting great result as we both were doing what we have been told to get a better result we had 24 eggs, 18 mature 14 fertilised which was really exciting to find out on day 5 that we have only 1 survived... 😔

I was really upset as i was expecting great result and the number of embryos was worse than last time...

But i had my FET and with that one little warrior I am 7 weeks pregnant...

With my last egg colletion with better numbers I didnt get a BFP...

Good luck and all the best with your journey...

I think it is because I used topical retinol that might have affected the eggs… I am so gutted but no one told me not to use it

Everyone said to me it only takes one and it really does. Wish you all the luck. I had 9 eggs all mature and only one fertilised. They said obviously the chances of that one surviving 5 days were slim but it did and it was transferred. It then beats the odds and implanted and I’m not 9.5 weeks pregnant. It only takes one. Just try and keep positive it’s all you can do. X
