Is the egg quality any better with Low AMH at younger age comparing to older age? Ok I understand they dont want to treat you with your eggs at age 44 but are they more successful treating younger women with same problem?

The short answer is no, a low AMH is not the same for a younger woman as for an older woman. AMH is just an indicator, not a rule, but generally it is used to measure your ovarian reserve—how many follicles and eggs your ovaries will produce. It is normal to have a low AMH in your 40s. I have low AMH but better than average (for my age) FSH, and my results seem to demonstrate this. I don't produce many eggs, but all of them fertilize and most make it to day 5 blastocyst. The problem then becomes just finding a genetically normal one. With a younger woman, you have more time to work on finding a good egg from your lowered reserve.

Its really not an exact science sadly, and you will always find miracle stories or bad luck stories.

I am 44, I have an AMH of 11, and yet I have been told to go with donor as my IVF results and repeat MCs suggest an egg quality issue.

I know someone who is 43, was written off with an AMH of 1.9 and told to go donor and had a miracle natural pregnancy that has gone to term and had a healthy baby.

You could argue younger women have better egg quality because they are younger but thats only one of a number of factors.

Why do you ask? x

Hi

My understanding is that AMH measures quantity not quality. There is no test for quality, they can only tell by the outcome of the IVF process and again they will usually say "it looks like an egg quality issue ". Age is certainly associated with egg quality, the older, the worst. Even within this forum you will see plenty of stories of low AMH, the younger the person the more likely they had success.

All AMH is, it gives you an indicator of your ovarian reserve. It doesn’t tell you whether your eggs are any good or not

Hey! I’m 36 and in a slightly different camp of problems, so appreciate that age is different for me, but from what I have read… whilst age is usually a factor in estimation of quality (due to the majority of use cases), not everyone however has the same quality of eggs at any age. Just like not everyone has the same quantity of eggs at any age.

There are some women that have healthier, or “normal chromosomal” eggs at 43+, compared to others in their 30’s. so I don’t think anyone can categorically state that eggs for ages 40-50 are automatically always bad or lesser quality compared to a younger person. It really depends on the person, their lifestyle, diet etc. Generally I think they say that as the eggs are older, they will be of less quality, but again it all depends on you as an individual 🌺
