When to stop progesterone - IVF

Hello ladies

Looking for some advice and sorry it may sound daft but my clinic were not very helpful so asking here.

I am on progesterone and been told to continue it till 12 weeks. Now my question is do I stop at the end of week 11 or end of week 12 ? I am already scared to stop progesterone but I know we have to stop it if advised. But I’d rather stop it after I make it to my 12 week scan and if this is harmful in anyway ?

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Thanks

I would think at the end of the 12 weeks. Especially because you are nervous about stopping. As it relates to me I would not mind stopping because i am so over these injections. I am 9 weeks but next week I think I will be in 10 or 11 weeks and my doctor told me that the day before i come in i should not take any of the progesterone and a few other medication I am on. The day I come in they are going to do the blood test and if the numbers look good with that one day without medications, I will be taken off same day. Is your clinic going to do a test run like mine or they just going to stop you without testing you?

Thanks for your reply. I think I will continue till end of week 12. So I’m no longer under their care I have been referred to nhs antenatal now so no I will not be tested and just been told to stop it by my clinic.

Well, thats a bummer 😕 but i am sure your baby will be fine. Normally the stopping time for progesterone is 10 to 12 weeks. I never see anyone say they took it past 12 weeks. Good luck on your journey

Thank you. I am going to need it because right now i am pregnant with twins and they make me nauseous right through the day. Most days i am throwing up twice a day, in the morning and night. Sometime it comes through my nose i think i am going to die. I got pills from the clinic but sometime they help but sometimes they dont.

If your clinic hasn’t given you proper instruction of weaning, that is really pretty poor show on their part! Especially as you have, like me taken this medication for months. You can’t just stop taking it - if that makes sense

My clinic told me to start weaning myself off my medication after my 12 week scan. They’ve given me a weaning chart already - I’m currently 8 week + 3 days.

You can’t just stop the medication, it needs to be done methodically

So for instance I was told to only take 1 cyclogest at night I think from memory for 5 nights then stop

My protogest I think goes up every third day - so it would be 2 vials for the whole week

And my progynova goes down from 3 to 2 tablets for 4 days then down to 1 for a further 4 before stopping

So you’ll need to ask your clinic to give you their weaning instructions

This isn’t true. I took it until 12 weeks amd just stopped. By 12 weeks, your body makes enough progesterone on its own.

That’s correct - my hospital told me the placenta can actually support it’s self from 8 weeks but they prefer to take you to 12 weeks before weaning you off, how I understand it you are weaned because it could cause side effects to just stop medication. I would always look to wean myself off due to this fact

I’m just saying most people aren’t weaned off progesterone. They are usually instructed to stop at 10 or 12 weeks. This question has been posted multiple times before. If your clinic weaned you Because of potential side effects that is fine but it’s important you indicate that since she is asking because she is scared for her pregnancy to just completely stop and there is no risk to her pregnancy in stopping.

I was told to stop at 10 weeks no need to wean. Placenta takes over progesterone production well before this if you look up the studies (week 8-9 I think). I have to say, I stopped this week and the lack of bloating and constipation is amazing! I feel so much better

Thank you ladies so much different advice. I have spoken to my clinic and they said no need to wean you just stop at the end of week 12 so I’m just a bit baffled now.

It won't do you any harm to wean slowly off after 12 weeks for a few days. It's up to you either way you'll be fine

Hi Simz, I’ve just finished taking mine, I took progesterone up until the end of week 11 which I was told in advance would be the case. When I went for my first scan with clinic at 8 weeks they confirmed this and told me the date to stop taking meds (which i’d already worked out as I couldn’t wait to come off them!) I was told to just stop, no weaning, which I did last week and all is fine 😍 it’s a relief to feel less bloated and like so many hormones are swishing around! X

Hey, I’m on endometrin 100mg twice a day, pio 1ml once a day and estrace 3x a day and I’m 6w3dtoday. I was told to discontinue it by week 10. But I’m sure they will give me proper instruction how to do so prior that.

I was wondering if you are still on estrace?

I’m going to ask them today about early instruction on how to discontinue my meds and will stare it here.

Hi... You clinic should be sending you a plan of how to reduce your medication. You shouldnt really come off it all overnight. My directions were to start to reduce progestrone from start of week 12..which is next Monday 26th....i won't be totally free from medication until the 5th May.. I would def ask them for proper directions and that may ease your anxiety too as your body will be weaned off rather than all in one go

Thank you but I spoke to a senior doctor from the clinic they have not been so good communicating as I asked for proper instructions. I was advised from week 11 to take the progesterone every other day and stop when I get to end of week 11 before week 12 so I am weaning off it. Hope this sounds right ?

My clinic said to stop at 12 wks but to ease off the Cyclogest slowly as is I was taking 4 x daily so took one away the first few days and another a few days after that until I was down to one for a few days. It was around 14 weeks till I was completely off progrsterone. It won't go any harm to be on it longer. It's messy but hang in there
