What advice do you have for someone starting Cyclogest progesterone pessaries?

Has my egg collection yesterday and was instructed to start Cyclogest today. I've heard many horror stories about them and mainly the mess and risk of getting vaginal thrush.

I'm worried because I am quite sensitive down there and get thrush pretty easily if I'm not careful with soaps and detergents etc.

I asked the nurse if I can use them rectally instead and she said to try them vaginally first and if I do have problems to call the clinic for advice. I don't know why as I would think both are just as effective.

So I've just inserted my first one vaginally. How far up does it go? There wasn't an applicator in the box so I just used my finger , went in and also about 1 inch of my finger. Is that far up enough? Sorry if this is TMI :(

In general, what advice do you have for someone taking Cyclogest. I'm already taking 1X Probiotic for women to prevent thrush. Wondering if I should take 2 probiotic tablets instead.

I always found as you put it in if you almost do a kegal it helps move into place if im making sense - also make sure you lay for 20-30 mins after to allow absortion this helps to

I always use the back passage - way less mess, it stays in place and it absorbed as easily :)

i used in the front then had a nice lie down for 20 mins..if you can't then back is easier. If you are prone to thrush then back is ok. My clinic didn't have preferance, however, i read that front better for ivf treatments.. maybe swap and do front then back and see how it goes. I can't comment on the probiotic as never taken this.

I used them rectally and I much preferred that! I have read that it absorbs the same so it doesn’t really matter where you put it!

With rectally, your muscles keep it in so you don’t need to even worry about lying down however I still did.

Hi starviolet.I found these pessaries the hardest thing about IVF. I'm on my 3rd cycle and have to do 2 a day plus an injection of lubion once every 3 days.

I really struggled doing them in the front unless it was at night time. I would lie down and then just felt them coming out all day.

I do my morning one up the back as there is no mess at all as I don't have time to lie down. It can cause me a bit of an upset stomach but that does get better.

I then do my evening one when i get in bed at night.

Wishing you all the luck for this cycle x

Hi FoxKinder

I react to the pessaries too, upset stomach and slight side/back pain/discomfort.

I hope your 3rd cycle was successful.

I am beginning to wonder whether my reacting to the supplemental progesterone may actually be harming my cycles.

Hi facingrealityI really hate the pessaries. My 3rd cycle was successful and I am currently 8 weeks 5 days pregnant and have settled into a better routine with the pessaries.

I must admit doing them the back way is so much easier and my body seems to have settled down now I've been on them for so long.

My clinic have told me to stop at 10 weeks but I have enough to last me to 12 so I am going to continue until then.

Where are you in the process? X x

Thank you, FoxKinder. I was wondering whether the upset stomach will harm pregnancy chance. Maybe not, seeing as it worked for you. Congratulations!! 🎉

Hello there I didn’t actually find them to bad to be honest. A bit messy in the front but you will know when there in just lay on the bed with your legs in the air then have a lie down. I used to do mine literally as getting into bed just washed my hands then bed. I then switched to the back totally less messy so just did a bit of both, my nurses said fine to do either . Good luck ❤️❤️❤️

I would ignore the nurse on this occasion and use the back door instead 😂

I’ve always used them that way because of the mess and had no problems on any cycle including my pregnancy x

Haha totally!! The only thing I was worried about is - Is it less effective up the back? I don't think so?? Ok up the bum it is 😂

No I don’t think so, I was always told I could use them either way! Literally no mess up with the back either and no need to lay down 🥳😂

I found they were fine at the front too - but I only had to use them at night. So never an issue re absorbing them. Usually had some discharge in the morning, but wore small pantyliners and all was good. My clinic did advice the front too, but never really asked why. I got really constipated .. so was quite glad not to have them at the back 🙈 Sorry - it is all so glamorous 😂 Wishing you all the best!! 🤞
