One or two embryos?

Hi all, I'm shortly going to be doing my first FET cycle after my fresh cycle ended in a missed miscarriage. Because of my age (nearly 41) my clinic have told me that I can put back two embryos, and the decision is mine. I have five frozen embryos, 2 A rated and 3 C rated, and an finding it hard to decide what to do. I don't know if I could cope with twins as I'm doing this as a solo mum, but also know that my embryos have a high chance of not being normal as I was 40 at the time of treatment. Have you transferred two? Did you end up with twins? Have you been given any helpful advice by your clinic? Thanks!

I used DE so a little different, transferred at 42 and I'm having twins. Pregnancy has been fairly straight forward (apart from anxiety) but the reality of looking after 2 is becoming very real. Also the cost of childcare to go back to work etc. I wouldnt change it for the world and I feel incredibly lucky and am very grateful but twins on my own I feel would be a struggle! Good luck.xx

I only ended up with two embryos last cycle and my clinic suggested both but I said no, they might be my only chance and I didn’t want to risk losing one over one that didn’t work or ended in MC and pulled the other out ( might have been me just trying my own head ) I think I personally would have been in a bad place if I’d had a double fail because my rounds would have ended in September but everyone does what suits their situation, embryo grades etc.

Getting ready for last embryo FET now and feel like it was right decision for us. Think it’s an easier decision if quality is lower to put in two or if you have more than three 🤷🏼‍♀️ hope you get the advice you need to make the right decision for you 😘💐💖

When you are doing fresh transfer more than one is better because it’s better for the embryos to go the uterus than to freeze. But if they are already frozen it’s all about how you feel about the money spent for a transfer, the 2 weeks wait and miscarriage, and risk of twins... no right answer

I had two top graded embryos transferred in early feb. I am 42 and this was my first FET after two missed miscarriages. I was told by various doctors and consultants to put two back as the only risk associated with that are that we have twins but if we are happy with that then fine and also the chances of two embryos being chromosomally normal at my age was slim. We transferred two and and on my first scan there were two sacs with heartbeats and one empty sac. I think what has happened is my embryo split which has resulted in twins and my 2nd embryo didn’t take. But if both embryos took I may have been having triplets. It’s still early days and we are still in shock and of course excited but just wanted to let you know what happened to us. I am now 10 weeks. Had a scan last week and all is looking good. I am excited, so grateful and scared all at the same time. Wishing you all the luck with whatever you decide to go for and sending lots of love xx

I transferred 2 and had twins in January I was fit and healthy and age 37 but found pregnancy brutal and was on bed rest from 18 weeks. If I hadn’t been able to work from

Home I would have been stuffed.

I started having major bleeds passing huge clots from 28 weeks and then had a placental abruption at 34 weeks and all 3 of us were in a life threatening situation. My twins were in NICU for 3 weeks. I couldn’t have done all that alone if I’m honest?

Now they are here it’s amazing of course and because husband works I do it all on my own all day (and all night!) but if these has been my first children I think I would have felt overwhelmed?

Oh and childcare costs are crippling - I have to go back to work when they are about 20 weeks as I’m the main earner. Childminder cost alone just for term time only care is £1,000 a month (would have been £2,000 in a nursery)

Only transfer if you are honest with yourself that you can likely cope with the pregnancy and caring for twins emotionally physically and financially once they are here

Thanks for all your responses ladies, I think I'm going to try my next best embryo as a single transfer, and if that doesn't work, then I'll try a double transfer. Luckily I have an access fertility package, so don't need to worry too much about cost, so my bigger concern is another miscarriage...

Now just need to hope my period doesn't take forever to arrive after the mmc...

Hi km307. Just wanted to say hi, as I am also nearly 41, and will also be a solo mum if this all works for me. Hopefully I will be having my embryo transfer on Saturday. I’ve also thought about double transfer, but I have decided I’m sticking with one, because whilst I think twins would be wonderful long term, I think they would be very stressful in the first year. My view is if it happens naturally, I’ll deal with it, but don’t want to knowingly put more stress on myself.

Thanks for your message, and good luck for the transfer on Saturday.

I agree twins would be really stressful, and expense! I think that's why I'm leaning towards only one embryo. The thing I really don't want is another miscarriage, and there's part of me that thinks if I put two in, I could miscarry one and still maybe have another, but that would still be awful. Besides, not sure I'll be lucky enough to fall pregnant on both my first and second transfers...
