Should I transfer 1 embryo or 2 remaining ? Really need help

Yellowbellow1212 profile image

Hi everyone, I have a very important question and I need some advice. I had 2 transfers done already ( one fresh 2 day embryo and one 5day frozen) both didn't work and I have 2 embryos left. My doctor seems to lean more to transfer them one at the time because I am 30 (young) and he says that sometimes one can affect badly the other ( i don't know if that makes sense) and also says twin pregnancies are more at risk. However I am really drained by all this and might push to have two of them at once. What are your thoughts? I am so confused the process has really been though on me and my bf.

Thank you so much

Hi there - I transferred 2 and had twins in January. Not going to lie twin pregnancy for me was brutal and was pretty much on bed rest from 18 weeks and ended up with an emergency c section and twins in NICU. That being said obviously having twins is wonderful 🥰 and it was my only successful transfer out of 4. Part of me feels like they needed each other for it to work (that probably sounds stupid!) Transfer the 2 but only if you are comfortable with the risk of carrying and raising twins x

Thank you so much for the advice. For sure it is another type of pregnancy. But I feel like after the two failed transfers it only makes sense to transfer the 2.

Hey, we are in similar situations. Same age, had two transfers already, both haven’t been successful and those were with my best grade embryos (5AA and 4AA).

My consultant was against transferring two with those first two transfers, but this time for my third transfer she said she’d consider allowing us to transfer two as it increases your chance of implantation by like 8%. That 8% is worth it for me if it means at least one of them sticking.

We have four left in the freezer, the next two we are transferring will be 2x 3AB graded embryos. I know now that these grades don’t mean too much really but I find comfort in knowing they appear the same on the surface!

We’ve thought long and hard about whether to transfer them both or just one. I’m scared to lose both embryos if this fails, but I like the sound of that slight increased chance of at least one sticking more right now.

We have also weighed up the risks incl. what if both stick and how would we manage with a twin pregnancy, both physically and emotionally. I’d be delighted with two babies, we can financially manage it and if we were blessed with two then wow, how lucky. But I know it means it’s a higher risk pregnancy and comes with its own risk, I’ve known two couples in the past year that have carried healthy twins so why can’t I? I keep telling myself we will be okay if that happens. We will have extra care.

We are pretty confident we will go with two because we’ve got four left, and that extra percentage of increase is appealing when you’ve had two failed transfers.

Hope this helps your decision xx

Hi thank you for your insight and I do really hope it works for you. The thing is we only have the two left. Also I don't think they are exactly the same grading. I don't know if that affects. I am really lost.

One is a B2 and the other is a B4AA.

I don’t know if transferring two with different grades has an impact tbh, I’m not sure how much I trust the grades either given my two “better quality” ones haven’t worked.

I think if I had two left, I’d opt for a single transfer. If my next transfer doesn’t work out, then I think that’s what I’d do, I’d transfer the remaining two one at a time. We are only really going with two (or leading towards transferring two) this time because we know we’ve got four left.

Best of luck to you xx

I agree with your doctor, transfer one. Also, by transferring one you have better success rates - cumulatively! Good luck hun xx

But after the two failed transfers my bf and I fell like maybe it is something we haven't tried and a lot of people seem to do it that way. I am very lost

Yes I do understand- regardless of what we think you should go with what you think is the best decision for you! 😊Xx

This is something my husband and I tortured ourselves with on our first round, and needlessly it turned out as we only got one embryo which didn’t implant. Round two we got two embryos and had them both put in (another negative unfortunately). For us the deciding factor was that our chances of success are already so low (I’m 41 with low AMH), so anything that increased our chances of at least one sticking was welcome. I know twin pregnancies come with higher risks, especially for women my age, but frankly I’d bite someone’s hand off for the chance of that too - two beautiful babies instead of one would have been fantastic. We’re just weighing up our options now if maybe do it eggs, probably after one last try with our own. And if we’re lucky enough to get two embryos again, we’ll definitely go for a double transfer x
