Smear test advice

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone has advice for me. Im due to have an FET in my next cycle which should begin in a couple of weeks. Today I got a letter from my GP reminding me to book in my cervical smear test, its been three years. Is it really important to do this before I have my FET at the end of Jan? I guess I can book a private test but am concerned it might push back my Fet. I sort of know the answer to my question but im wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and if so, what did you do.

Thanks so much X

Has your clinic not asked you for a valid smear test? My clinic won't let you go ahead with a transfer without one. I think you should do it. Given its been 3 years I wouldn't want to wait another 9 months before doing one, and as someone who has had a dodgy smear result.. whilst it was annoying it delayed a round of IVF it was definitely worth getting checked out and treated so I knew I was starting IVF with a clean bill of health.\

I know the waiting is maddening but health is most important xx

Hi Daisy thanks for your reply. I know you're right just a further potential delay is killing me, it just seems one hurdle after the next. The clinic did ask but I first went there 12 months ago so I guess it wasn't a concern then :( Thanks for your response Xx

Can you get an earlier smear? My gp surgery did mine the week after I called and the results were rushed back

Hi Ginny,

Prior to finding a complication on my scan in November I was due to start an IVF cycle and the same month my smear test lapsed out. My clinic insisted I needed proof of an up-to-date, clear smear before I could book in & so I called my GP surgery and explained the time sensitive issue. The receptionist panicked me by saying smears weren't happening at the clinic during Covid but would get a nurse to call me back. Anyway - my point is despite their current restrictions and delays my amazing GP surgery managed to rush me in for my smear and I had my results through the post within 2 weeks, despite being told it could take up to 8 weeks for the result!

Hopefully you can call your GP surgery tomorrow & rush it through?

Wishing you loads of luck with your FET 🍍 xx

Great thank you, I will try exactly that. My clinic dont seem to check things like that a second time (I've been with them for a year), so it feels like if I told them I'd be causing an issue. But good idea, will call my gp in the morning and see what they can do. Thanks so much Xx

I had the same problem, just a week before starting the treatment, I called my GP and they gave me an appointment next day for the smear test.

When we got told we were getting to the top of the waiting list for IVF, my smear was actually not due for another 4 months, but I knew if we were to be lucky, I would be overdue with my smear. I called my GP to explain and they were amazing! They fit me in straight away so it would not be a delay when we came to it and I got results much quicker than initially told too! So maybe if you call to explain they might be able to sort it for you 🤞 I feel it is really important to make sure you are fit and healthy before you start, you don’t want any regrets. I wish you all the best!! 🥰

I was in your situation and had a Pap smear once I got pregnant at 10 weeks so it can be absolutely done later on if you wanted to

Hello Ginny! I had this issue before my first IVF cycle last February. I asked the doctor and they said not to wait, if you fall pregnant they won't be able to do it for another year. My GP is really quick and I got an appointment before I properly started. The cycle didn't work but I doubt it had anything to do with the smear test. Good luck!

Hi Ginny,

As other posters I had the same issue - my smear test was overdue by the time we started our cycle, and our clinic needed the results by embryo transfer day at the latest. Privately, the test would have been £500 and done at egg collection (this is for a fresh cycle), but I managed to get my GP to squeeze in an appt and had the results within two weeks. Good luck with the smear and the FET!!

I had to have mine done again during treatment (as treatment lasted over 3 years) I had it done and the clinic started me on meds etc unfortunately 6 weeks later it came back as abnormal cells and I needed treatment immediately so IVF was halted. I then had the surgery pain as well as the prostrap and hormones to deal with 🙈 and IVF treatment was delayed by 9 months until I could get a clear smear 6 months later. I would say do it as soon as you can so you can get the results before starting any treatment too....sometimes they take a while to come through xx

Hi Ginny, the same thing just happened to me. The letter came through the post in December and my FET was yesterday. I checked with my fertility clinic that it was safe to do the test before my FET which they confirmed it was. If you do get pregnant then you can’t have the test until sometime after you’ve had the baby, so I wanted to be sure I had an up to date test rather than having to wait another year.

In terms of delaying your FET, as long as your clinic already has your previous smear results I would just go and do the new test and say nothing to the clinic. The reason being that if they know you’re about to do another test they might ask you to delay the FET until you get your new results. I thought my clinic were about to say this to me, luckily my FET went ahead.

Good luck!

Good Morning, I would have your smear test done before Jan for piece of mind that your are in good shape. I had one every two years whilst undergoing treatment. If your consultant is doing it ask about an endometrial scratch at the same time.

Good luck xx

If your clinic doesn't check the results, just do it ASAP and wait for the results for yourself. I know how it feels low priority because I've been there in 2017, but really it's for your health, which is top priority: if you get pregnant, you want to be a healthy mum to a healthy baby!Good luck!

You should do it. If there is something that needs treatment you want to do it before. Better to delay than add problems to a só wanted pregnancy. And most clinics require a recent one. Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for your kind responses. I called up my GP this morning and am also looking into doing it privately to speed things up. Sometimes it just feels like the barriers are endless. Thank you all for your advice :) XXX

Hi Ginny, as others have suggested see if you can push forward a quicker smear at your GP surgery. I wouldn't go for one once pregnant as the results are not accurate, hormones can give false results and so try do it before transfer or delay transfer for a month. Best wishes xx
