Ivf & smear test at the same time.

Hi all! I was wondering if anyone could help me. When we decided to go ahead with ivf, I asked the doctor whether I’d need a more update smear result...as it was July and my smear was due November. He said because we were starting ivf end of September we would be fine. Last Wednesday when I was due to start My first injection of Gonal F, the nurse said to be...”oh your smear is due in November, you should really get that done ASAP otherwise we won’t be able to freeze your eggs if we have to”

I feel a bit uncomfortable having my smear test done during the ivf process and I’m a bit annoyed I’m being told this months later. With the current situation, it’s been difficult to try get a nurse appointment, as they are so busy with blood tests and flu jabs.

Has anyone experienced this and know whether I should go get my smear test done even though I’m leaning closer to egg collection or whether I should just wait and see what happens?

I was on similar situation as you but I had slightly more time to do and get it done. The clinic NHS told me we cannot go ahead with stimulation before the smear is done. I would suggest to get it done as soon as you can, they been quite strict with me.

Hi, I have been in a similar position. Having had a dodgy smear and colposcopy last year I have learnt the importance of regular smears but also have a ticking biological clock which urgently needs addressing. The last round my clinic said I couldn't progress without a valid smear as mine was due in September.

My doctors have been terrible with things like blood tests and appts, literally impossible to get one, but actually when I rang for a smear they were prioritising and I could get an appt within 5 days - so you may be surprised and its worth calling your surgery.

I did however then find that results were taking a lot longer than normal i.e. 4-6 weeks! I spoke to my clinic about it and originally they said they wouldn't let me go ahead with the round without the smear results but then when they realised my age etc they said they would let me go ahead but I had to verbally acknowledge that if there was a pregnancy I could be putting my life at risk if I then had a dodgy smear, and I had to acknowledge the risk associated. They then let me go ahead with the round.

I think there is some flexibility but if I were you I would try and get your smear done anyway now even if you don't have the results.

Ahh I see that makes sense Daisy. I guess it’s just going to have to be a risk I’ll have to take. I think it may be a bit late for me now as I started the stimulation drugs last Wednesday. I’m just worried if I need to freeze eggs they won’t now

Hi Nmhbaxy. I would have thought you need to have the smear test before any stimulation drugs start. If you can squeeze it in before, then go for it. Your clinic will advise. Good luck! Diane

Hi Diane, thanks for your reply. I’ve already started stimulation drugs. The nurse had told me on the first day I started them, so was worried about having a smear at the same time
