Smear test

Hi everyone I hope you are well.

So I was hoping to get booked in to start my fet next week when af arrives as unfortunately I didn’t get in last month. 😫 I’ve been speaking to my clinic over the last few weeks as my smear is up mid October and they advised to get it early as tf will be on the same week my smear runs out. After a 2 week struggle with my gp practice I eventually got my smear done early so now awaiting results which can take upto 6 weeks. The problem is my clinic are saying they need results before they can book me in? Bare in mind my current smear will most likely get me by tf date. It’s so frustrating to think I might have to wait again even though my results will actually be here before i officially start and get my prostap injection which is 3 weeks after af arrives. Anyone have any advice on this please?

Thanks xx

Hi Kurstx, I think it is common for clinics to be sure you have a normal results before treatment. I had to provide evidence of my last smear before my latest cycle. It is so you don’t fall pregnant and then discover abnormal cells which need treatment. You wouldn’t be able to have the treatment if pregnant and this puts you at more risk of cancer if you can’t have the treatment. I know it is painful having any delays to treatment but I think this delay would be worth it to know for sure you’re healthy. Best of luck xx

Hi thanks for replying hun. I completely understand that being someone that has had pre cancerous cells removed before it’s so important to be sure all is ok. I just feel I could be booked in provisionally as I won’t start until 3 weeks after af arrives and my results will be back before that if that makes sense? I’m just finding the waiting hard atm time is ticking and covid is on the rise both things i can’t control tho so I’ll just need to try relax and stay positive. 🥰 xx

This happened to me, NHS was going to take too long to get results so I got it done privately. It was about £80 I think but meant I could get the show on the road. I was paying privately for my last round anyway so that was like a drop in the ocean! I didn’t pay my clinic to do it though as that would have been £££!

What a nightmare!! Glad you got it done. I had looked at getting mine privately up until my gp decided they could do it wishing I’d just paid for it now to get results quicker. 🙈x

I had mine done privately too and results came back a few days after from memory. Might be worth looking at still? Best of luck with your transfer! Either way it will soon come round xx

I was in a similar situation but was delayed getting smear done due to covid then couldn’t restart treatment until I’d rebooked my smear. It all worked out though in the end and I got my results within 5 days and then went ahead and carried on with my treatment. Xx

Hi Kurstx I’ve been in a similar position and the gave me the prostrap whilst I was awaiting the results. The results came back and I had precancerous cells that needed immediate attention (the same week) and I had had to cancel my baseline scan that same week too With IVF clinic after going to the hospital and having surgery. I then also had to deal with the prostrap hormones And withdrawal bleed as well As the surgery so I think your clinic are doing the right thing not proceeding until they know the outcome. My clinic admitted that was a mistake on their part.

In terms of getting your results quicker I needed an ‘all clear’ smear 6 months later after op and was desperate to not have to wait another 2 months for the result so I phoned up GP and got the number for the place processing the smear and pleaded my case to them. They couldn’t tell me the result over the phone but they did dig mine out of a pile of hundreds and fast tracked posting the results out to me and my GP so had them within 3 weeks. This wasn’t the norm and took a lot of persuading and phone calls but might be worth a try? Xx

Hi sorry to hear to had been through all that. ❤️ My results should be through before I’d be due my prostap injection. my clinic are saying they won’t even book me in on 1st day of period either way until they have results. I will try what you have done and see if I can get my results through quicker. Thank you xx

Aww I’m that case that’s such a shame as the chances are higher that the result is clear. Maybe it’s so that there isn’t an empty spot if you drop out? Could you maybe ask to speak with the doctor and see if they will make an exception for a few weeks and after you won’t proceed with prostrap unless they are back? Xx

Its such a tough journey anyway without anything else on top!! Yes I think that might be the case especially now with reduced numbers due to covid. Yes I’m going to do that no harm in asking I guess! I know it will only be another month if I don’t get taken this month but when you have been waiting so long to get started again it’s like a lifetime lol xx

So sorry to hear this. I had the similar issue - luckily my clinic didn't ask for smear results - as it turns out after downreg for two weeks went in for my scan to find a big non functional cyst on one of my ovaries. Cycle cancelled - wait and see what happens - I am gutted - but least I can get my smear test in! xx
