Carbon monoxide testing

Can anyone tell me how frequently you get carbon monoxide testing done when doing IVF? We’ve only just had our referral from GP to gynaecology to have lots of tests done. We knew that the NHS wouldn’t refer us for treatment if either partner smokes, so I gave up a few weeks back (with patches). Hubby stopped for 1 week, and passed his test on Monday. As soon as he passed, he started smoking in his gaming room again, and I had my test yesterday and failed! I can only assume it’s from passive smoking, but I’m so angry as I’ve done really well and they still won’t refer us until I pass my test. Needless to say, he’s banned from smoking in the house now, but I’m worried he’ll get tested again at some point and obviously fail. Finding out we need IVF due to low sperm count has made me miserable lately, and the smoking situation has just made it worse and is putting strain on our relationship!

Well done on giving up! It can depend, he may well get tested in clinic again further down the line. Im sure you are aware but smoking has a detrimental effect to the sperm and count so your OH would be best to try to kick the habit asap to make his sperm as good as can be when it comes to egg collection/fertilisation - sperm takes 3 months to improve. Im not surprised you are fuming, I would be too!xx

Thanks Cinderella. I honestly just feel like it’s me that’s made all of the effort and lifestyle improvements even though it’s his sperm that’s the problem. I know he feels bad about that so I’ve tried to give him some time and tried not to make him feel any worse, but in the meantime I’m just sat here questioning his commitment!xx

I think that's a pretty common theme on here, Im sure other ladies will agree! Us ladies have to go through so much and all the blokes have to do is stay healthy and jizz into a cup! Ha ha ha Is hard as you don't want to put too much pressure on him but could you even say that you've been chatting to a few people on here and its possible he could get retested at a later stage so could he try to give up again for both your sakes?!xx

Well done on quitting smoking. I am so sorry you have gone through all the hard work to quit smoking for your partner not to. Especially when it is so detrimental to sperm quality. You must be feeling very upset right now. It is a tough situation as sometimes when we put pressure on someone to change it can make them go to other way and it can cause added stress on your relationship. I really hope he comes to the realisation himself that his sperm quality is very important for this process. Sending you lots of support on this tough journey xx
