Only 2 follicles found at 1st follow up scan 😞 - has this happened to anyone else?

Hi All,

This is my third ivf cycle - i am 39 with low amh of 5.1 pmol/l.

This time i took dhea for 3 months before stims and i still only got 2 viable follicles (11mm and 12mm) and one small follicle at 7mm.

On my baseline scan i had 8 follicles so was feeling hopeful as previously i had to abandon one cycle and in the other cycle i only produced 2 mature eggs from.

Im wondereing if i should just cancel egg collection and restart next month but not sure what difference it would make.

Has anyone had such small number of follicles in the first follow up but later found a few more follicles?

They are similar in size so I would be inclined to go forward to egg collection - I did with a cycle where only had 2 follicles and both became blastocysts and I’m 15 weeks with twins - it is a gamble though

Do you have to pay abortive cycle fees if you cancel and try again next month?

Thats so amazing - really happy for you - fingers crossed all goes well xx. Definitely gives me hope. I dont know how good my egg quality will be though i have been taking ubiquinol. I found it hard to find a vegan brand for ubiquinol - what did you do to help boost your egg quality? Do you have low amh as well?

My cycle is as chelwest on nhs so not sure if they will charge me for abandoning - tbh i am not sure the outcome would be any different.

Hey. I have just posted a similar question today! I am 42 and had my scan this morning. I had 4 follicles between 16-20 and another 3 14-16 and lots around 10mm and my clinic initially wanted me to continue stims until Sunday but the consultant said to go ahead with EC on Friday as planned even though they expected more follicles. Am so confused! X

That’s really good sizes, my consultant said anything over 15 is mature and good , you also have a couple of days and they will grow a bit more x

Its early days, I am not sure you should be cancelling anything. Is this your first scan? Its not an exact science and sometimes your ovaries are hiding and your follicles are hiding. if it is your first scan you have plenty of time for new ones to turn up.

What are your clinic saying? x

Ya for some reason they cancelled my scan on Monday and only did the one today. My clinic are happy to go ahead with EC. My OH is a doctor and Google’s everything 🙈 and all he has done is send me all the shocking stats for poor egg collections. They do struggle to fully see one of my ovaries so 🤞🏻there might be more follicles in there hidden.

Im glad you said they could be hiding - i did have a different sonographer today too. My next scan is on Friday so ill see how it goes then. Thank you x

Hi Leah, yep they will keep me on stims until monday, so another 5 days. I suspect the 2 existing ones will grow but was hopinh for more follicles. Thank you x

I had two at 17 and two at 12. Nurses thought they were going to go ahead at start of week but they kept me going another couple days and the smaller ones caught up so I'm hoping for 4 collected tomorrow x

Keep going lovely. All you need is one! Focus on them growing beautifully, healthy, mature and then visualise the embryos fertilising perfectly to make chromosomally normal embryos, and, And and.... in the end a gorgeous baby. keep focusing on what you DO want, not what you don’t want! Big hug xx
