Hysteroscopy worries

Morning!

I’m booked in for a hysteroscopy on Wednesday and am feeling really anxious about this. I will be awake during the procedure. Last cycle I had a scratch and I can honestly say I’ve never known pain like it. Can anyone who has had both relieve my fears? I’m petrified it’s going to be as bad as the scratch and having to leave my partner in the car and go it alone is only adding to my worries.

Just to clarify, I usually have a really high pain tolerance and pain doesn’t worry me but the scratch was something else! Lots of people had said it was painless but that wasn’t the case for me at all. This is part of the reason for doing the hysteroscopy, I’m certain there is something not right.

Morning MissZJB, I’ve had both the scratch and hysteroscopy and found it was no where near as bad as the scratch. I had the scratch twice, the second time it was excruciatingly painfully! So you’re not alone there. The hysteroscopy was fine compared to that, slight discomfort but that’s all. Try not to worry, I’m sure you will be fine. Good luck xx

Thank you so much for your reply, that’s really helped put me at ease. Did the hysteroscopy cause your period to come early at all? I’m going away 3 days after so keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t appear x

It was a few years ago now but I don’t remember it causing my period to come early. I also didn’t have a biopsy, it was just to have a look around. They found a fibroid but because it was so small they said I didn’t need to do anything about it. Hope it goes well x

Hi MissJB,

Can you ask to be put to sleep for it? I don’t want to scare you but mine was really painful and they had to stop because it was unbearable. The doctor told me 50% find it painful and 50% are completely fine but because you’ve had a scratch that was painful I would definitely push for it under general.

I had to go back for a second one under general a few months later xx

Oh no! I’m having this done on weds and flying on Saturday so I’m not sure a GA would be recommended. I’m scared again now! I guess everyone is different and I’m not really gonna know until I’m in there xx

Sorry! Don’t want to cause you any extra worry but just wanted to be honest 🙈 Make sure you take some paracetamol before you go as that should help. Hopefully won’t be painful for you xx

Hi lovely, I had one of these done last year

. I was terrified and kept putting it off. However, was not painful at all and nowhere near as bad as i was expecting. I was awake but numbed in the area. The only thing that was uncomfortable was when they took a sample for a biopsy. You'll be fine I'm sure if it. Sending hugs and lots of luck. Xxxx

Thank you, that’s reassuring. Do they always take a biopsy? I was told it was just for a look around! I can’t call the clinic as all the phone lines are still on answer machine x

No I dont think so, I got a biopsy as they wanted to check why I have thin lining and spotting etc but they didn't find any answers anyway! Xxx

I'm currently waiting for a hysteroscopy as they haven't started yet at my NHS clinic. I have had one before and there was the option to have localised anaesthetic which Dr indicated wouldn't be necessary. I had it mid way through as found it very painful (some people don't feel anything though). Ask for the pain relief upfront if you are going to be awake
