Age limit on egg collections??!

Does anyone know if there is an age limit/ advisory limit on when it is sensible to do egg collections until??! I appreciate everyone is different but I’m trying to work out time lines which is doing my head in! I’m 42 in November and I was meant to be doing a third egg collection next month but for a few reasons I might just get on with a FET transfer instead (we have one left and one mosaic). I realise that time is sensitive with egg collections but I’m also not sure if I might be done with them and that if this next transfer fails I might go straight to DE. It’s just all quite a lot to deal with and me and egg collections don’t get on so well!!

I can only advise what my clinic has suggested for using your eggs which is 43.

Also might depend on your reserve. I have low reserve and recurrent implantation failure could be due to egg quality as in abnormalities.

Yes, you’re right. I’m 43, have low amh and have had 2 natural mmc. It will depend on the individual but my clinic will treat me currently 🤞🏻🙏🏻 Taking all the vitamins and doing all I can to help with quality.

I had an egg collection at age 43, results were much better than any egg collection I had at 42. That said, if you have it in you, I'd really prioritise doing another egg collection now instead of transferring. At 42/43 there are only so many egg collections you'll have the time to do anyway, and you responded well to your last stimulation so - this should be a short lived effort.

On the other hand, if you find egg collections really too overwhelming, you might think of it as the following: you need to be well (both physically and mentally) for your future child to be well, be the child conceived with OE or DE - and let this inform your decision.

Yes practically it makes sense to have an egg collection but realistically am I going to go on to have a second child anyway at my age??! Do I need extra eggs collecting?! Kind of want to focus on having one first! All things which are going round in my head.

You’re so right about mental well being. Spot on. It’s not that I find egg collections overwhelming as such but the medication doesn’t do me any favours. Was borderline OHSS last time and had to be medicated.

Hey I am 43 and my clinic originally said that the stats say that for the average person doing ivf / egg collections at 43 doesn’t give you any more of a chance of pregnancy success than trying naturally so they usually use this as the age they start to recommend stopping treatment - they won’t treat at all at 45 however my consultant recently mentioned a clinic in London (don’t know the name) that have been treating up to 48 and 18 live births for women between 45 and 48 last year!

At the moment my clinic is letting me carry on because a) I seem vaguely sane still b) financially we can afford it and c) as you know we’ve had mixed success but due to my MC and my ivf and natural pregnancies (all doomed) they for the moment think it’s ok to carry on, we originally were told end of year to stop but I wonder if that will be pushed back given delays

If I was in your shoes I personally would probably do an FET, i have seen seemingly more success from them and losing a couple of months I don’t think would be a complete disaster (obviously I’m not a medic!) xx

Gosh I’d love to know which clinic is doing live births at 48!! I have to say this wouldn’t be for me but I’d love to know! Interesting re the stats. I think we have a cut off of 45 too. Thanks a lot for your input, much appreciated xx

I have just done ICSI and I am 44. I am sure my clinic would allow me to keep going if I wanted to. I had got successfully pregnant after just turning 42. At 42 success rate is 9-10% then drops sharply. Think it depends on whether you have any other fertility issues apart from age and how long you want to keep going for with this percentage success rate. If I hadn't got successful at 42 which was my 2nd attempt I know I would have kept going but that's just my personal choice.
