To do Laparoscopy for endometriosis or not?

Hi all,

I wanted some guidance as to whether to go ahead with laparoscopy to find out I have endometriosis or not? I have extremely heavy periods, painful periods, monthly pelvic pains and also pain during sex. I have also has two failed IVFs. I was wondering whether I should I get a laparoscopy to see if I have endometriosis but I’m scared if I’ll have more pain afterwards or not?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hey i dont have endometriosis but when i did my laparoscopy 2 years ago they did see some tissue around my ovary and they ‘burned’ it away. For a while afterwards the pain after BDing was gone. As we are unexplained it atleast gave me an idea if what was physically going on. I must say it took me a week to recover. X

Hello, have an MRI first, that’s what I had and they will be able to see if you have anything of note. Might be a good option before going for the laparoscopy. Goodluck!

I would say yes. If they find it they’ll treat it at the same time. I felt instantly better afterwards.

I had laparoscopy and they have removed a lot of endo tissue. Plenty is still left but it explains some of the pain and symptoms I'm getting.

I had laparoscopy first. Then i was put on prostap and 5 months later I had our first ivf. Now my 18 month old is terrorising the household 😂

Thanks so much for your reply and congrats on your hearing your beautiful child. Can you tell me what prostap is? Also did you have severe endo?

In simple terms, from what I understand, prostap stops you progesteron production and puts your body in chemical menopause. With all the joys like hot flushes and mood swings. It supposed to hel endo calm down and reduce the inflammation. It was a tricky time but worth it. I was told that I will have to go through it again before my FET.

I’ve had it done and yes it can be painful for a few day’s after but honestly it’s the best thing I ever did. I didn’t have any of your symptoms. I was struggling with bowel movements and struggling conceive. So none of yourself classic symptoms. I have stage 4 endo on my left ovary and tube which they treated best they could. I really struggled with sleeping and the consultant said no wonder I was basically struggling with the hormones of menopause. Helped me xx

Hello. I am really sorry to hear that you are in pain often. So I have stage 4 endometriosis which was ONLY diagnosed from having a lap. About 2 years ago, I just couldn’t get pregnant naturally and was referred to Assisted Conception. At first there was no talk of IVF it was just let’s do a lap and see what is there.

On the day I woke up from the surgery, the Dr told me it was stage 4 after years of being told by other doctors that I did not have it. Typical! He said I had to do IVF. A few months down the line, it was discovered (as I was just put on the IVF waiting list) that because my tubes were swollen, water can leak from them into my womb and that this can drastically decrease the success rate of IVF from like 58 to 36%.

So I went in for another lap and I had both tubes clipped. I think getting the lap gives the dr a clear picture of what is happening in there. The good and the bad. They can see where it is and see if they can remove it. Sadly, mine was to extensive to move but I am lucky that it’s not on my ovaries.

I haven’t had my transfer yet (FET this cycle) but I got eight top grade embryos in March. Hopefully getting my tubes clipped will be worth it.

I would advice you to go for the surgery as it can make a world of difference. It’s not just about getting pregnant. It’s about having a comfortable live and knowing what is causing the pain. Period pain that painful is not normal no matter what a GP tells you!! I know now that after I have my family, I want to get a hysterectomy as the pain is to much for me. I also heard that having a baby will clear most of it away. I pray.

As for after the surgery, it was a day or two of taking it easy and maybe some cramps. My second lap was more painful but after a week I was fine. I think if they go in and don’t do anything (don’t remove any endo) then it’s less painful and quicker recovery compared to them removing a lot of it or doing something while in there.

Thank you for your detailed response. It really helps. While I don’t suffer from extreme pain right now, I don’t have painful sex sometimes which I don’t think is normal.

Hi before I started IVF my clinic sent me for a laparoscopy and am so glad they did as I had endometriosis and suspected blockages on both tubes. They lasted the endo and although I was distraught both of my tubes appeared blocked we had a successful first IVF cycle. My son is now 4. Am now 6 weeks pregnant with his brother or sister. I say go for it as nothing to lose. It’s keyhole so it’s a fairly quick recovery time. Good luck 😘

Endometriosis can be diagnosed with MRI.

If you do have endo then lap helps. But just to diagnose endometriosis, than you don’t need it. They can see it on an MRI. And from the result they’ll advise you what’s the best treatment.
