How long after stopping progesterone do you miscarry?

Hi ladies,

Hoping you’re all well at the moment. On Monday we had our 7 weeks scan which showed an empty gestational sack - heartbroken. However the doctor told me to stop progesterone and I should have a period to miscarry naturally. The waiting is killing me, as I sort of want closure on this horrible time. I just wondered if anyone knew how long it usually takes?

Thank you xx 💕

Hi, I’m so sorry about your miscarriage. We went through this in February. I let it happen naturally as well, and the waiting after progesterone was really difficult for me. For me, it happened 72 hours after stopping progesterone (similar timing to getting a bleed after failed cycles). I think it varies for everyone and the amount of progesterone you’ve been on with the injections being more long lasting and taking a bit more time for the levels to go down. For me that was 72 hours. I hope you will get some closure soon. Xx

Thanks Peony, and I’m sorry you’ve also been through this 😢 it’s heartbreaking. It was our first go and I had so much hope after the positive test just for it to go wrong so quickly ☹️ Trying to stay positive now but it’s hard as I just want my body to allow the closure. I stopped progesterone on Monday after the scan but have no signs of a bleed yet. Will stay patient and hope it happens soon xx

So sorry to hear this and cannot imagine the upset and disappointment you are feeling. From going down the IVF route we have had to go through so much already and then for it to be taken away it must be just so sad and upsetting.

Look after yourself and your partner and hopefully you’ll be able to smile again soon and if you want to try again you will have the strength to move forward with it again.

Can I ask if you had any inclination of this, or was a complete shock to you?

Stay safe and sending a virtual 🤗

Thank you 😊

I felt about a week ago that my symptoms didn’t seem to be progressing, eg I didn’t feel sick anymore and my boobs felt less sore - other than that I felt pregnant (and still do until the miscarriage happens 😢) xx

Really sorry Catlady. The waiting must be awful; can imagine you want closure so you can grieve and move forward. Again, really sorry you're having to go through this. Thinking of you. x

Hi. I know an old post. I am going through exactly the same thing as you have described. I wondered how long did you have to wait for the bleed. If you didn't mind talking about it still. It's just awful waiting. 😟

Hello, this just popped up in my feed. I’m so, so sorry you’re going through this. I experienced a blighted ovum found at 7 weeks not long ago. - It’s such a cruel emotional rollercoaster and then I found it awful being in limbo and unable to move on as I waited to miscarry.

For me, it took about four days after stopping the cyclogest pessaries I was taking to miscarry. Fortunately it was over quite quickly with a cramping episode one afternoon followed by a long period. It took five or six weeks to get a second period after that and I’m not sure I ovulated that following cycle as I was tracking - I’m told this is normal.

I hope that gives you a bit of insight. I hated waiting and even looked up the medication used to induce abortions as I was so keen to move on. I believe you can talk to your local EPU about this if nothing happens after a week or so. Take care and make sure you do whatever you need to to get through the next few weeks x

Sorry you went through this too. Really appreciate you taking the time to respond to my question. I stopped taking my progesterone on Thursday just gone. I took my last one in the morning before my scan. I just don't feel like my body has registered that the pregnancy is lost. My boobs still really kill. So its making me think its not going to come any time soon. Can I ask if this is not too much info. Did it start like a period so maybe a bit of brown spotting or did it go full on gush. I know every one is different any way. But never experienced any type of miscarriage before. Xx

Ugh I’m so sorry, it’s horrid just waiting for it to kick in.

For me, I was sitting on the sofa and noticed slightly worse than normal cramps. I then had the usual bright red blood and passed a few clots over the next few days (which I assume was the sack). My period then lasted about a week but I only really had cramping and pain that first day. I hope things move on soon for you and of course that you can be at home and somewhere comfortable next week x

Thank you. You have been really helpful! I really hope it does kick in soon. I just want to move on. This was my third Fet transfer. Just such a torturous process xx

I know what you mean! There’s the emotional toll and then there’s just the annoyance of how much time gets wasted too x

Hi all. I’m really feeling for you, as I’m now going through the exact same.

Went for my scan on Thursday 21st and no heartbeat. Last progesterone was that morning. I’ve still not started miscarriage yet. It really messes with your head. All my other miscarriages happened quickly, so this is torture xx
