More chance of pregnancy with 2 single embryo transfers or 1 double embryo transfer?

Hi,

I am wondering whether the chances of being pregnant are higher if you do 2 single embryos transfers or 1 transfer with 2 embryos? On the one hand, putting just 1 embryo gives more room for the single embryo, so that might be better. On the other hand, I keep reading that people use double embryo transfers at my age, saying the chance of twins is very low. But doing this implies either that one embryo is unable to become a child, or implies that by putting 2, one will not have a chance. Then, why put 2 in the first place? Anyone has some lights and facts on this?

xx

Hi Lilly 👋🏼So what the consultant told me (based on my age though and on a frozen cycle) was that there was a 50-60% of single embryo transfer being successful. 2 embryos in the same transfer increased the chances by up to 10%. Obviously higher risk of twins though so need to weigh up the risk of that vs higher success rate. The only time I have been pregnant (early mc though) was with a double transfer but that could just be a total coincidence. They didn’t mention anything about there being less room for the other embryo at implantation stage only complications further down the line with a pregnancy with multiplies. Where did you read about the more room for the single embryo as I can’t seem to find anything on that? I would like to look into that for future tries as I am hoping to do a natural FET next month and was going to opt for double transfer again but want to make sure I have ALL the facts lol xx

Thank you for your reply. Based on probability calculations and the mid range of the data you got, if we transfer 2 times a single frozen embryo, the chance of no success will be 45% * 45% = 20%, ie the chance of success is 80%. So if you do a double transfer and the chance is only 10% higher, ie 65% instead of 55%. That would indicate that it makes more sense to have 2 single transfers rather than 1 double to maximise your cumulative chance of being pregnant? And yet, consultant keep transferring 2. I would like to get to the bottom of this as every embryo counts and we need to optimise our cumulative chance of success

yeah as a maths and stats gal I get that but I think in reality we also want it to happen yesterday 😆 so cumulative odds later down the line being higher than this try right now odds being higher is a personal choice and also the chances decline with time too as we age. The embryo is important but so is the body prep and if that has went well this cycle (ie lining in a better place than usual etc. You might want to chance the 2 transfers) In all honestly it’s a game of chance isn’t it -the right one at the right place at the right time. 🤞🏼 You also need to consider the quality of the embryos can differ and sometimes consultant might suggest a double transfer if both medium to low quality GOOD LUCK whichever you choose xxx
