OTD 1O days or 14 days?

Hi you all strong ladies,

So I have a question for you. Both my uk clinic and now my Czech republic clinic, have told me that after a 5 day embryo transfer to wait for the agonising 14 days, or else known as the stressful 2WW !!!

So, then my question is how do some of you mention that your OTD is at 10days after a 5 day embryo?

Do clinics have that much difference in opinion or have I misunderstood something?

Apologies in advance for sounding thick!

Hi Crista,

I had a 5 day embryo transfer [currently 6 days in] and was told to wait 12 days to test - we have used the ICSI process with the NHS.

I think all clinics are different - no idea why.

All the best x

My clinic in uk said 14 days and so did Czech clinic. Though I could never wait that long. All have different protocol

All clinics have different views on how much time you should wait and seem to range from about 9 days to 14 days for a HPT. My clinic was around the 11 day mark for fresh and 12 for frozen.

I think those with the longer wait period do it to be absolutely certain of the result. You can occasionally get a late implanter so they don’t want you to go through the heartache of a no if it then becomes a yes - my clinic say if you get a no and haven’t started bleeding then keep on meds and test again 3 days later (prolonging the agony in my view). I did ask them had they ever had a test change from a negative to a positive in that time period and the nurse I spoke to said she had 1 lady who did get a very very late BFP. But that’s 1 in however many hundreds of patients she must have seen.

Conversely they don’t want you to test early, get a yes and then go through the heartbreak of a chemical pregnancy. When I had my chemical if I’d waited until OTD to test I would never have known it was originally a BFP, I would have just thought it was a failed round (personally, as heartbreaking as it is, I do think you need to know about chemicals because if they are recurring they are indicative of an underlying issue you may not know about).

If you weren’t undergoing IVF and had a normal 28 day cycle then 9dp5dt is the day your period would be due and the day most HPTs are able to reliably pick up a BFP. You can test positive earlier but there is more chance of a false negative before that point.

Good luck with your wait. Hope it doesn’t drive you too crazy and you get your BFP at the end of it.

Thank you. It makes so much sense, what you said , about prolonging the waiting time to exclude chemicals.

This is an interesting point. My clinic hasn’t said why they give 14 days as otd but I’ve always suspected it’s to avoid the heartbreak of chemical pregnancies.

I’m like you though - I feel there’s something to be learnt from knowing that a CP occurred.

Hi, I was told to test after 14 days. It's the longest 2 weeks ever!!! 🤯

My clinic says 9dp5dt for testing and with both my pregnancies I had a clear positive by then. That’s the equivalent of 14dpo for a non IVF pregnancy by which point >90% of positives will be seen on a sensitive test like a FRER x

The clinics all seem to give different OTDs. I had assumed it was based on the person's specific treatment plan, but maybe different clinics have different beliefs on when tests give accurate results? I've not heard of an actual 14 day wait under IVF, though, unlike with trying naturally, so I guess you are one of the unlucky ones!

So I understand that if an embryo was conceived naturally day one would be ovulation day (around) and a missed period would be 14 and the embryo would be created on ovulation day which is 14 days before period, that’s 2weeks wait. With IVF a 5 day embryo is five days and so a further 9 days in your uterus would make it 14 days old and putting all the hormones in your system as if it was there from the beginning. That’s why you can test from 9 days post 5dt and 11 days from 3dt. I tested BFP with all my pregnancies when embryo was 10 days old. That was 8dp2dt, 5dp5dt and 4dp6dt. I hope this helps. Some clinics however go go 14 days some 19 days. Mine went 12 days at all 3 clinics.

My NHS clinic is 14dp5dt with a urine test. My private clinic is 12dp5dt with a urine test (although if negative they have in the past asked me to carry on until day 14 and double check) but bloods can be done on day 10. It all seems to vary from place to place. Good luck.xx
