Something nice and safe to keep me regular but not be harmful to babies

I am currently eleven weeks pregnant with twins and suffer with long-term constipation. Pregnancy is making it worse and I just wondered if anyone had any ideas on what I could try next to keep me regular, will cause minimal abdominal pain and pose little to no risk to babies. I usually take Biscodyl but my consultant has advised against this as it can cause contractions. Milk of Magnesia and Lactose have been okay but not enough to keep me regular. Any non-judgemental, productive advice would be greatly appreciated.

In Brazil they swear by papaya - but it must be nice and ripe. My in-laws all suffer from 'slow' bowels and my sister in law eats half a papaya every morning. It has fibre and water like any fruit but it also has enzymes that break down protein - you can use it to tenderize meat. But don't eat it if it's not ripe. Good luck with your double trouble pregnancy xxx

Thank you! I will try it as I've not even tried papaya before so fingers crossed.

Lots of fruit and vegetables, especially pears, prunes, kiwi nd apples. Have a different soup every night and lots of water. I have the same problem and it was worse during pregnancy.

Yeah it's getting worse, I know I need to give the prunes a go. :-s

I was totally the same for the period of time I was pregnant. I was advised that some forms of senna (can’t remember which) were fine to use and helped lots. Sure u already know lots of water and plenty of the good old five a day but another one (which is totally natural) and fine during pregnancy (but do check for yourself too) is fig syrup. In my opinion, tasted awful but helped all the horrible aspects of constipation, sorry for the too much info, but it softens stools and seems to bring on bowel movement too. Wishing you the best x

I will definitely try fig syrup because any disgusting taste beats this awful clogged up feeling. Don't apologize for TMI, when it comes to this I have no dignity left - I just want to poo!

My consultant said absolutely no senna and I actually didn't ask why.

Def best to always double check anything and run it by clinic too if poss. Fig syrup worked me and I know how bad it can be, so keep your chin up. And congratulations on pregnancy xx

I suffer with constipation and have a really healthy diet full of fruit, veg n water but nothing seems to work. Have you tried fybogel sachets? X

Fybogel gives me really bad abdominal pain but no bowel movement. My IBS means my bowel doesn't tolerate fibre like at all. I eat plenty of fruit and veg, drink loads and am active but does nothing, even worse now I'm pregnant.

Congrats on your pregnancy ❤

I suffer with constipation, I've been told influenced by my cycle and endometriosis. I use laxido orange sachets and the Patient Info Leaflet says it's safe for use when ttc & in pregnancy. It helps me loads. I'm unsure whether it would be okay to use it regularly, over a longer period of time in pregnancy but worth looking into 🙂 xx

Thank you! I will look into laxido and how it works because I don't tolerate fibre very well. I would also need it to be long-term because I think that even as I leave the first trimester I will still continue suffering.

Aww you poor thing, I've been there and it's awful! I drank some prune juice which loosened everything off but I was in tears with it so you definitely have my sympathy. It's not one of my finest moments anyway during this pregnancy and my husband ( in his attempt to help me relax) has had many laughs at me lol. Dignity is definitely out the window anyway!

🤞 you get some relief xx

I think my husband is sick of hearing about it (I tend to moan a lot when I'm constipated). But the excitement when I go! ;-)

I’m pregnant too and I’ve been anaemic since the beginning (I’m 35 weeks) so I’ve been taking iron tables which make constipation even worse! For me, prunes, prune juice and flaxseeds (I use a blender to make it in to powder) really works. And drinking a lot of water otherwise too much fiver without water can do the opposite!

I'm 6 weeks and struggling with constipation. Least to say it not been a pretty situation. Feel terrible but I have increased my water intake and started having more prune 2 a day which is helping. I have also been eating less junk food and eating lots of nuts. The sickness has over taken my life I'm gagging all day. Shouldn't complain really happy to be pregnant. ☺️Good luck with you pregnancy. ☺️
