Short cycle ICSI - typical medication costs

Hi

We are hoping to start our second IVF cycle at guys hospital next month - it will be our first privately funded cycle. We were hoping to get an idea of how much medication costs would be but they haven’t been able to give us an indication. Would anyone be willing to share approximate costs - I know it varies depending on drugs but looking for a rough number. Thanks!

I’ve been buying my meds at the hospital pharmacy. 12 doses of menapur/ gonal F is going to be £850+ That’s the most expensive bit. The trigger shot is about £35.

I should also say it will depend on doses! I take 375 of menapur. So the above is a really rough estimate.

Thanks - it’s really helpful to have a rough idea.

Am so sick.... I had one dose of gonal f (300IU) left over. Due to good response was advised take last shot that night meaning would have a spare. I got so excited about actually getting a refund for once, as possible as long as packaging unopened. Well did my Partner not open it by mistake. Raging wasn’t the word 😂

I was sorely tempted just to take it but as had 2 x large follicles was scared may get too big. Anyway as it went 2 of the measurable follicles didn’t make the cut in the end so I maybe should’ve just taken it.

Anyway I have an unused 300 IU Gonal F pen in the fridge, seems a shame to waste it let me know if you would like it x

I think it all depends on the medication as it varies for short protocol. I was 300 daily of Menopur, fyremadel and then with an ovitrelle and suprecur trigger and it cost £730.

Remember you can shop around but you’ll need a private prescription if you are x

Is that Guys hospital in London? How much did they quote for the overall treatment (excluding medication)? I recall they mentioned a while ago IVF is about £5k on the NHS- does that sound about right? My first NHS funded IVF attempt just failed, so planning ahead for when I pay out of pocket.

I think 5k is about right, but then I had to pay around another 700 to freeze embryos and store them, plus around another 700 for medication xx

How easy was it to pay privately with Guys? Did you have to pay upfront, or will they bill you at the end? Really appreciate your help

Oh sorry I missed that you said Guys... mine was with the Hewitt centre at Liverpool women’s hospital. They billed us before egg collection for the main part and then the bill for storing/freezing came afterwards x

Yes Guys in London - think it’s just over 4k for ICSI without medication. Think iVf May have been just over 3k but not totally sure.

I am having self funded IVF abroad and on a short protocol. If you have a private prescription, Asda do their fertility drugs not for profit and if not in stock get in within 24hrs. These were the cheapest I found.

My friend who is a pharmacy dispenser priced up for me and her pharmacy was almost twice the price.

My short protocol cost just under 5k for the cycle, plus about £1000 for drugs (450 dose menopur plus fyremadel plus 10000mg trigger) ICSI would have been another £200. Then after ET I was on cyclogest pessaries and fragmin. Will remove fragmin as not ‘normal’ and total cost came to about £6500

They gave me a price list at my first appt so easy to calculate but of course you are well invested already then mentally if nothing else! We had to pay the cycle cost up front but drugs as collected and we only got 7 days drugs at any one time to cover you to the next appt - no expectation to buy anything all upfront x

Hi there I am doing ICSI now in London and the meds are creeping up to £2000.

Not to scare anyone but it does vary.

I have also had to buy more off the initial list.

They do estimate to be safe another 2k on meds. And freezing it depends on the clinic.

Best of luck.

I ended up getting my medication through my private clinic. I’ve been too scared to add it all up, but I’m pretty sure it’s now just over the £2300 upper estimate they gave 😱

Hi

For some reason Asda sell fertility meds at cost. They are allot cheaper than buying from the hospital pharmacy as I just found out 😀. Ovaleap is coming in at £225 per box. Wishing you all the luck xx

Hi Char1st, We've been buying our medications from ASDA pharmarcy which worked out about %60 cheaper than the hospital pharmacy. Get the list and check their availability and prices before you commit yourself.

Hope this helps?
