Hi I just wondered if anyone has had this procedure under local anaesthetic? I was referred after ivf was cancelled due to thin and uneven lining. They explained that this would be able to diagnose any issues such as scarring and may even be able to remove them. However my letter came saying this will be done under local anaesthetic however I thought it would be general. I called the hospital and they informed me that most of their hysterscopies are now local. I’m absolutely petrified of the pain? Any advice or reassurance would be welcomed x

Hi Prayingforafamily. I can fully understand your fears. I had to have one myself last year and was petrified! They told me to take 2 paracetamol an hour before I was to have the hysteroscopy done, but then they gave me some intra-venous Midazolam, and quite honestly, I didn't care what they did to me! Being on the other end of things was quite different, but I must admit all my ladies were briefly "knocked out" for a short while! I'm sure they will look after you. Just tell them you are frightened and they will give you what I had or similar. Hope all goes well . Diane
Hi Prayingforafamily - yes I have had this done locally a few months ago (looking for reasons to why I keep miscarrying) and like you I was terrified and wanted to be completely knocked out, or alteast sedated in some way.
I had 2 failed attempts at a HSG a few years ago, one where I passed out and one where they simply couldn't get the catheter through my cervix and they gave up! No local aneasthetic was offered then. But I can honestly say this one recently fine. I explained how worried I was and they really looked after me. They did give me some lidocaine, which numbed the area. I felt a bit uncomfortable when they pumped the liquid in, but nothing worse than a period cramp. I didn't even realise they had put the catheter in (which was the bit I was worried about the most) - the nurse was totally distracting me though by talking about netflix. And because I am a fainter, they let me stay lay down for a while after until I felt better.
I then went home and relaxed on the sofa and ate chocolate.
Good luck - all was fine for me. Definitely ask for the local aneasthetic - apparently it can be done without it eeek
I have had one under general. Based on what my consultant told me, personally I would push for that or local with sedation x
