Hysteroscopy with local anaesthetic

Hi

I need a Hysteroscopy to remove a polyp before I can start my IVF treatment. I’m having it done privately, but even then the wait for it to be done under a general anaesthetic was about 10 weeks. Therefore I am having it done with local anaesthetic in 3 weeks time (I’m keen to start IVF asap due to my age).

Can I ask anyone who has had this with local anaesthetic to share their experience please?

Thank you.

Hi,I haven't had a polyp removed, but I have had a hysteroscopy where I was awake and they took a sample. I was told to take paracetamol before. It's quite uncomfortable at the time, you just have to keep listening to them so you don't focus on the fact it's uncomfortable. I could feel when they took the sample, but it was manageable and quick and I was in and out of hospital within 3 hours, drove myself home and then took dog for a walk. Recovery was quick.

Definitely preferable to being under and waiting. They discovered a subseptate uterus on mine and the wait to sort it was very long, so I went out to Greece and had it done within a couple weeks.

Good luck

X

Thank you so much for replying. Your experience sounds really reassuring, as I am expecting some pain but just worried it will be agony. And the recovery time is so much quicker than under a GA.

I’m sorry they found complications with yours, but pleased you took action to get it resolved so quickly! Best wishes x

You have to really relax and focus on what they're saying rather than doing. Watch the screen, ask questions. Every one is different and you may find it a breeze.

Good luck.

I had it with local anaesthetic and removed a polyp with NHS. Quite painful but managed to get through it . I wasn't told to take paracetamol before hand due to miscommunication. But yes overall happy I didn't wait. Actually before I was offered the local anaesthetic procedure I attempted privately to have the polyp removed under general anaesthetic . It failed! My cervix was almost closed and the camera couldn't get through!

Thank you for replying, that’s really interesting that they couldn’t even do it under GA!! I will definitely take painkillers xx

Hi, I had it removed under GA and it wasn't too painful afterwards, I just bled small amounts for a few days then I felt completely back to normal and didn't need painkillers.

Thanks for your reply, I’m not too fussed about the pain after, my worry is that I will find it too painful during the process, but I’m going to take painkillers before and give it a go! X

Hi, I had hysteroscopy and a polyp removed today. I went in there having taken 3 Naproxen tablets an hour before the procedure. Personally, I found it very painful and asked them to stop. They offered me local anaesthetic, which was administered by two injections in the cervix. It didn’t hurt at all and kicked in right away. Thereafter I didn’t feel much at all. I would definitely recommend having the local anaesthetic.

Hi, I’m so glad it went well for you!

I had mine, exploratory part was ok, but when they put the local into my cervix it didn’t work and it was too painful so I’m going back for a ga. My cervix is really far back and I was told that he had to really pull it which is what hurt. I was screaming!

Thank you so much - I’m just so relieved it’s been identified and removed and I can now continue with the treatment.

I didn’t want to scare you by saying it, but I was screaming too! I know everyone experiences pain differently but I can’t get my head around how the advice is to just take a paracetamol. Seems a bit medieval to me! But I am super happy with the outcome and am feeling hopeful.

Hope it all goes well for you too and wishing you best of luck.

I think it is medieval!! I’m so glad you managed it though! The local just did nothing on me - I feel like it wasn’t left long enough may be? Anyway, I’m booked in next week, so just want it over and one with!

Wishing you so much luck - on to the next step now!!! Xxx
