Question on fallopian tube

Hi, has anyone been told that she has unhealthy fallopian tube(s) (due to adhesions/scar tissues) and doc recommends to remove the tube(s) to increase chances of conceiving via ivf? Reason being, there’s a possibility that the failure of past ivf cycles could be due to the poor tube (e.g. embryo implanted on unhealthy tube and that caused a miscarriage/ectopic)?

I’ve heard the same I had right ectopic a few years back but my left is partially blocked but my clinic wanted to continue ivf without taking the tube out

Hello, I had both tubes removed in July last year, they were completely blocked due to previous infection and all the evidence suggests ivf is much less likely to be successful if damaged tubes are left in. Operation wasn't too bad, and I had my first ivf cycle in January this year. That one failed but we had our one frozen embryo transferred in April and I'm now 10 weeks pregnant after 3 years of trying. Trust your consultant, they know what the best course of action is. Congrats! Hope you’ll have a smooth pregnancy and delivery! As for me, I think I’ll do the pgs testing and get my tube checked again before deciding.

That sounds like a good plan. I had two scans on my tubes, one by a consultant, before we made the final decision to have surgery. Mine was a fairly clear case though so if in any doubt definitely make absolutely sure before having anything done. Good luck x

My clinic don't really grade embryos, or if they do they don't tend to put much emphasis on it so I don't know - they said it looked good and that was enough for me 😊 It was a day 6 blastocyst which was expanding nicely when thawed.

I had.

I had the right tube removed due to an ectopic pregnancy (right tube was scarred), and during the surgery, they discovered that the left tube was blocked and filled with fluids (hydrosalpinx). The fluid is embryo-toxic and may hinder implantation, also by "flushing it out" (Diane can provide you with a better explanation!).

Therefore, I decided to clip the left tube. Clips are an alternative to removing the tubs completely, but not all consultants are happy with clipping because the clipped tube can lead to abscesses.

Do u need to go for follow-ups/scans? Also, how would you know if u have abscesses?

My doc used the term ‘clipping’ - I believe she’s referring to the tubal ligation procedure, she said that it’s an irreversible process. Is that the same procedure as what u did?

Yes, it is the same I did, and it is indeed irreversible (but also scarring and hydrosalpinx are irreversible).

I guess you can spot abscesses with fever? No one ever mentioned follow ups. I don't think abscesses are very common, but something worth keeping in mind?

Following the discussion with Camillage below.

They tried to drain the hydrosalpinx while removing the ectopic, but it did not work, and I needed further surgery for the clipping.

I was also in denial, and this is why I went for clipping rather than removal. I preferred knowing that it was still there, also if useless. I know, it is stupid, but I was not on the right headspace for taking it out.

It’s not stupid and I totally understand. A really difficult decision I’m sure. Where are u at now? Going through ivf?

Midway in my second cycle. First IVF was a disaster but it wasn't related to the tube

I dont have experience of this but I am sure they can try to drain the hydrosalpinx rather than remove the tube - it all depends. I guess they are being sensible looking for the source of the cause first. But do be comforted by the fact that even with no tubes you can still get pregnant. It is not at that stage yet for you. But it may be reassuring to know that.

I’m in limbo right now. The thought of removing my remaining tube is just hard. The doc said tt when they did a check 2 years ago, the tube was not swollen, just adhesions, so they didn’t see the need to remove/clip it. But since I have been getting failed cycles, this might be the cause. They’ll need to test it again to determine the cause.

The other possible issue is that I’m producing chromosomally abnormal embryos. So I will need to do PGS testing in my next fresh cycle.

Sigh, that’s basically the story of my life.

I have blocked/ damaged tubes, I haven't had them removed(although I don't have a hydrosalpinx) and have had IVF which has been successful. If I was getting failed cycles etc I would have the tubes out there's no point in them if you're doing IVF- trust the doctors they're the experts xxxxxxxxx

Hiya, I think my AMH was 32, I never used a fresh embryo all mine were frozen straight away but the one we used was a 4AA and we used it in an all natural FET. And yep not due anymore my little boy was born on Wednesday 29th in the morning 😁😁😁😁 xxxxx

I cut down my sugar, went to the gym 3/4 times a week, made beetroot juices and drank pomegranate juice, I wasn't particularly relaxed before and after transfer, and after transfer I literally ate whatever I wanted so I'd say most important point is before the transfer xxxx

I think it is important to know if there is fluid in the tube or not. They can do a diagnostic laparoscopy to have a look and clip/remove it only if it's necessary.

I have an unhealthy tube that sometimes swells up with fluid as a response to hormones - like an 'intermittent' Hydrosalpinx. My only FET with PGS normal embryo failed so I'm having it removed/clipped in June before doing another FET. My other tube is also gone due to an ectopic. It is a decision not to take lightly, but in my case, it was no use to me for years of trying naturally and it is only interfering implantation and causing recurring issues.

Thanks for sharing. I have heard of someone who had the fluids, removed her tubes, and was able to conceive with ivf. I shall do more research on this and will discuss with my doc.

I had a failed cycle with the damaged fluid filled tube. I then had it removed and my 2nd cycle was successful and baba is 10 weeks old now. Listen to your consultants advice Xxx

Hi I lost both my tubes and just had ivf 1st go and it's worked im 7weeks yesterday had scan seen heartbeat over the moon.. xx everyone I know who has lost there tubes ivf has worked 1st time for them xx

I had a laparoscopy in January cos my consultant wasn’t sure if one of my tubes was open and he feared there could be some liquid in the tube which could wash away the embryo once implanted. I had a test with some liquid put in and it still wasn’t clear if it was open or not, and I had to do a laparoscopy... luckily the tube was open and they left it in. The operation is a key hole operation and quite straight forward - you can recover in a few days. My consultant was highly raccomending not to do ivf unless we knew the health of the tubes - otherwise u could waste your money and time. I am now 14 weeks pregnant with twins

Hi, thanks for sharing and congratulations! l did the HSG test before and the dye passed through, but there were scar tissues so doc said tt it’s not the healthiest looking tube, she recommended to proceed with the FET first and if it fails again, the next step would be to got for the PGS testing in my next fresh cycle and to get the tube checked again.
