Transferring single embryo vs two for success?

Fingerscrossed38 profile image

Our clinic will only let patients transfer single embryos because they say it has a higher success rate than transferring more than one FET.

This article seems to back it up: theguardian.com/science/201...

Has anyone had any personal experience of transferring two frozen embryos and it failed but when they transferred a single it worked? Obviously comparing similar quality/graded embryos

My clinic abroad always transfer 2 embryos as they feel the success rates are better but I know in the UK they try to eliminate multiple pregnancies by only transferring one embryo at a time (especially if under 35) as there are risks for mum and baby associated with multiple pregnancy. The article you have seems to be talking about putting back embryos of very different grades. Ive copied in the guidelines form HFEA below in case you havent read it.xx

Yep it does compare transferring different graded embryos which is more than likely common to have them all of identical grade I'd suspect.

Just wondering if anyone has personal experience of transferring two it working or if it failed did transferring two work instead?

Ive transferred singleton embryos twice and double embryos 3 times....we got a BFP with a double transfer but had a miscarriage. Couldnt say for sure if we had only one emrbyo take (as we has a complete miscarriage 2 days before scan) but that is the likely scenario as our hCG bloods werent high enough for a twin pregnancy.xx

Sorry to hear of your losses. Can I ask if you were to do another FET would you transfer two or one personally without the clinics rule of transferring two?

Thank you! I wouldnt say its the clinics rule just their preference, always been down to my choice. Im definitely doing a double transfer, that has always been my preference where possible. Ive done OE cycles and now doing DE cycles. I would say that the cycles where I have had 2 put back the embryos were very similar gradings....all good but not always exactly the same.xx

I’ve had 5 transfers, on the 3 I’ve transferred 1 embryo I’ve had BFP’s sadly 2 resulting in mmc. However the 2 cycles I’ve transferred 2 embryos I’ve had BFN. For me personally I would always go with transferring 1 x

Thanks for replying.

Sorry for your losses. It's not fair. I've also had a missed miscarriage and it's so cruel. I think I'll likely transfer 1 (if there is one to transfer). My clinic only does single transfers.

Wishing you the best of your journey

I had one transferred on our first cycle which was unfortunately unsuccessful so they advised us to put two back in on the second and now I’m 10 weeks pregnant with twins! I honestly think it’s just down to the luck of the draw though sweetheart! Good luck with whatever happens 😊💕 xxx

My fresh cycle of IVF was a single transfer and was successful. I have also just had a double FET transfer and am currently pregnant awaiting my viability scan next week. My fresh cycle was a grade A and the FET were both Bs xx
