Clinic refuse to do day 3 transfers

Hi ladies. Okay so had second scan and still only 3 follicles. Gutted and annoyed with my stupid body. Anyway trigger 2nite, collection Monday and they said next sat for putting back in (if there are any). I said but might it be thursday or friday as i've heard many say if they are looking weak etc they put them in earlier as thrive better in the body. Also had a friend get a day 3 put in and had her little gurl from it. They said categorically no...that its their policy that if they are not strong enough to make it to day 5 they dont go in as results say odds are not good and gives false hope. I'm so mad!!! Clearly this is about keeping their success statistics good. I am gonna have 3 eggs collected (at best maybe less) they might not fertalise and if one or two make it to day 3 and starting to look like they may not make it further i want them in!!! They are my eggs...surely i should get a say! Anyone know if there are rules and i can demand a day 3 transfer come day 2 or 3? Seven thousand pounds...i at least want a 2ww/ glimmer if hope/ experience of pupo. Anybody else had a clinic with this policy? Anyone else know if i have right to ask for day 3 transfer?

Yes i'm gonna try and find out my rights as if finding out today im ready for trigger with only 3 follicles wasnt torture enough they giving me more hurdles to jump through to even have a shot at getting one back in

Hey hun yes you have every right! I can't believe they said that! At my clinic if you have 4 or less embryos fertilize they automatically do a 3 day transfer and for that exact reason - none might make it to day 5. Especially if this was not funded or on the NHS and you paid for it I think you definately have every right! My friend had a 3day transfer and now has a 5 year old! Was her only embryo, well she had 2 but other one was arresting and they said we need to get this one in asap! I would be fighting that for sure, your eggs, your money etc! Hope it all works out for you hun xxx

Thanks for your support. Yes im totally shocked and really dont need that kind of pressure and stress right now. I'm syre this is about their stats. My 6 grand and my blummin eggs. Who do they think they are. I need to find out my rights. Gonna start googling to see who i call for that. Cheers Niki_B

Thank you.xx

I only had 2 embryos that took and had a 3 day transfer, they both took and I’m having twins, I was encouraged by the clinic to have a 3 day transfer as it’s better for the embryos xx

I have never heard any clinic who don’t do this. I thought they all offered day 2,3,5 and 6. Maybe check out the HFEA website. It gives guidelines on what to expect x

Thanks yes i'll look it up. It seems totally wrong.

I’d ring them, don’t tell them your name and ask for the email address of a person for feedback/complaints. That way, you have a name and can direct your questions at.

Thanks. Rang the HFEA website number but closed over weekend. Have sent them an e-mail and will try calling them Monday. Will try talking to clinic Monday to make sure they wont make an exception if i ask first and then try your suggestion. Thanks for your help.x

Mine only offer 3 or 5 day depending on the situation.

Try not to fret on numbers. I only had 3 and they all made it to blast. Stay positive on that but definately find out about that stupid day 5 policy. X

No way! That does sound strange, like a success rate thing, I would definitely look into it further, seems totally unfair.

I was told 2,3 or 5 days depending on how they were progressing

Hope you get sorted x

My clinic only offer a 5 day transfer. Luckily I got 1 embryo to blasto at day 5, so currently on 2ww. Which clinic are you with? Xx

Oh sending you lots of lucky baby thoughts. I'm with GCRM Belfast. Apparently its a very new policy for them.

I think you have to do what right for you. Think you should ask as to why they are recommending a day 5 transfer. Best to have all the facts first so you can make an informed decision. Good luck xx

I've asked a friend of my sisters who is an embryologist. He says he agrees to an extent as the longer you leave them under observation the more info the lab will be able to obtain as to why it doesnt work (if that turns out to be the case). My clinic use time lapse imaging and so should be observed without having any disturbance and it is also felt that if they are going to be strong enough to be successful they will be strong enough to make it to day 5. My argument that others that have had a day 3 have had a bfp is met with "if that embryo had of been left to develop it would have made it to day 5". My friend also thinks it should ultimately be my decusion though and i am still convinced this has more to do with their success stats

This is a complete nightmare. Hopefully you are able to talk some sense into them when you go in for EC. If not ask them to escalate it to someone more senior.

It should surely be your choice.

Hopefully you get to day 5 but you don’t want to stress until then xx

Just seeing this update.. Im sorry its been so stressful for you. While I do understand their reasons for wanting to do 5 day, like you say its your eggs, your money and so you would think it should ultimately be your choice, hope you get some clarification at EC and good luck! Xo

As you’re paying for it, I’d 100% be querying it. I did a 3 day transfer on first round and probably wouldn’t do it again as it meant I worried the whole tww and it didn’t work. For me I’d rather wait for 5 days to see how they look, but this should definitely be your choice!

Check your paperwork because surely they should have this in writing up front before you paid them as this may have changed your mind from using that clinic x
