Brown spotting at 5 weeks and 4 days

Hi Ladies

Just wanted to ask a question. I'm 5 weeks and 4 days today thru ivf day5et, my hcg didn't double in the second test after pregnancy confirmation. It was 118, 131, 215, 483. Noticed some dark brown spotting today. Called my clinic, they said not to worry and take a progesterone shot. I read some people had spotting and went on to give birth to healthy babies and in some cases it ended up in miscarriage. I'm worried about mine.

Hidden and Hidden have both had spotting in their pregnancies and all is well. I can understand how worrying it is (had it myself once) but try not to think the worst. Spotting is quite common in early pregnancy and more often than not, the pregnancy is fine. Keep an eye on things. Unless it turns bright red, enough to fill a sanitary towel and is accompanied by severe cramping then hopefully it’s just one of those things xx

Thanks Tugsgirl. I see you trying to bolster up people all the time. You are lovely. Power to you.

Thank you ☺️

I was going to add a ps, that if you’re using pessaries they can also irritate the cervix and cause spotting xx

Haha. Pessaries gave me hives on neck and some itching down there. So didn't use them this time.

Ah ok. Itching I get but hives.. you were really unlucky. I don’t blame you for not being on them xx

I had spotting of all kinds of colours till about 10 weeks went on to have a successful pregnancy. I’ll be hoping the same for you xx

Hi.

Congratulations on the pregnancy ❤️

I’m sorry to hear you are going through this it’s so scary.

I have had lots of spotting with this pregnancy mostly brown between 6-14 weeks but I had fresh blood with small clots at 10 weeks. It was only when I wiped I’d see it. The midwives that I spoke to & there were many 🤣 told me spotting is very common, as long as I didn’t have severe abdominal pain and heavy gushing blood not to worry. They suggested severe pain was the first sign of a impending miscarriage with heavy bleeding.

My experience of a chemical pregnancy in 2017 was pain then bright red spotting then full on bleeding with huge blood clots , once it started it didn’t stop. There was no mistaking it.

I’m now 23 weeks pregnant with a little girl 💗 i also bled heavily with my son at 7 weeks & he was deemed a threatened miscarriage. I hope that can give you you some hope ❤️

I know so many friends & family that have spotted in early pregnancy & babies have been fine ; my mum spotted with me & my sister must’ve been very worried as my Dad remembered it 37 years later! My sister bled with my nephew & niece ( my niece at 5 weeks & like like me continued till later she had 3 scans before her 12 week one ) my sister in law bled several times throughout early pregnancy with my nephew. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t had some spotting in early pregnancy!!! I wish it was more well known so ladies wouldn’t feel so freaked out when it happens. Providing it isn’t heavy bleeding it’s okay 🙂 and some women have had heavy bleeding and been okay!

The advice I got given by a GP was to rest up like bed rest.

I would contact your clinic /GP to get them to book you a early scan ( in my area a GP has to refer you to early pregnancy unit) they won’t want to scan you till you are 6 weeks.

Take care xoxo

Thanks for the reply Jesse. I am just worried because I haven't started bleeding yet. It's just Brown discharge and my hcg didn't grow the last time I checked and there is no gestational sac. Stopped progesterone shots, how long to bleed after a failed pregnancy??

Hello ladies

I think this is it for me. Hcg not raising, spotting, Brown blood, they couldn't see embryosac in the scan. It's a m/c. Heart broken.

I had weeks of this on and off during my early pregnancy..and the day I stopped using the progesterone pessaries, it completely stopped. I’m now 15 weeks.

There’s lots of reasons why spotting can occur and if it’s brown it’s usually nothing to worry about.

Good luck xx
