Rubella vaccinations

Hi all,

I’ve now got my pre-screening appointment through for our ICSI treatment. The letter said I’ve to bring results of my last smear (ensuring it was within the last 3 years, which it is) and also evidence of 2 rubella vaccinations. I’ve got a copy of my vaccination history from the GP but it looks as though I’ve only had 1 rubella vaccination when I was in Primary 7 (ie 11 years old). Do I need to get another before my pre-screening, or will they do it at the pre-screening? Do I need to have had it done with enough notice?

I plan to phone the clinic tomorrow to ask, but worried in case my appointments are going to be shifted back because of this. Anyone else had this issue?

On my gp records it showed only 1 vaccination too but my mum said I definitely had both. I just had a blood test and they confirmed I was ammune x

I agree. Any tests you need they will just do there and then so it won't stop you moving forward. You may have to pay if not nhs. X

Hi! I’ve been told that I had to be immune to rubella, I’ve not been asked to have proof of 2 rubella vaccinations.

I couldn’t find my vaccinations card (I’m from Italy, and the cards have disappeared in my parents house), so they tested me and resulted I was not immune.

So I had to get vaccinated, and after 4 week I got blood taken to check the immunization. Results are coming this week, if I’m immune I can call the clinic and get booked for the treatment.

I hope this could be god any help, but I would check with your clinic anyway as different clinics could have different protocols.

Thanks all, I’m going through NHS so hopefully they will check for me. My GP had to go back to centralised archived paper records, and luckily found mine. My appointment is on 20th Nov, so I’ll keep you updated with what happens

As far as im aware NHS guidelines are not to screen for rubella immunity anymore. I was tested and came back as not immune when i first attended to start treatment in 2016 (i have had 2 vaccinations and a blood test in 2004 confirming immunity), my clinic werent concerned as the guidelines changed after my blood test and i was told they no longer have to screen women so it didnt matter!

Hi, I’m going with NHS, and as I was non immune I’ve been told I had to get vaccinated for rubella. So I had to delay the start of my treatment for a month. This was happening at the end of September. Maybe it’s different from zone to zone. I don’t know.

Hi, I’m waiting to start NHS treatment in Glasgow. The rubella vaccination documents weren’t a big issue. My GP only had record of one vaccination but I definitely had one. The clinic screen for it as part of your bloods so don’t stress too much about getting the evidence.xx

Hi. When I was seen at the NHS fertility clinic i had a rubella blood test done. I then received a letter from the hospital (July 2017) saying they received the results, unfortunately it showed that I was not immune to Rubella so they strongly advised that i had my MMR at my GP practice.

I remember arranging this with gp surgery who required some paperwork from hospital to go ahead with the blood tests as these were to be sent to the hospital direct. I then needed to have further blood tests so far apart to see if I was immune to Rubella before i could proceed with IVF.

I know its a pain in the rear as i too was thinking this is going to delay things but you dont pick and choose these things. If you need it, you need it. Patience is key when it comes wanting a baby so badly.

In our relationship my OH was the impatient one out of us, he would get so frustrated and blurt out what came to his mind without thinking what he was saying and not realising how it affected me too. I used to tell myself and my husband it will happen, God knows in advance what is right for us and when the time is right it will happen for us. So when things happen they happen for a reason. At the time when things dont go our way we dont understand the bigger picture. Blind faith, hope and belief kept me going in this long journey.

By the grace of God i am now pregnant and the feeling is surreal. You wont stop worrying but thats natural. I strongly believe it will happen for you and everyone else TTC. Good luck with your journey, you have the support from the online community here. 👍🤞🙏❤

Hey prettyb, I had bloods done for rubella by the NHS. I'm sure they will arrange that for you unless it differs from hospital to hospital! Wishing you the best x

Hiya, I wasn’t able to provide evidence of rubella vaccination. The NHS hospital I was attending at the time did blood tests instead to check if I was immune. Thankfully I was. Try not to worry, bring along whatever you’ve got and they should be able to figure out the rest xx

Thanks everyone for your advice and well wishes. I phoned my clinic and they said to bring along what I have and they will do a blood test at my screening appointment.

They can do a test to check if you are immune. I think it’s only two if you had mmr, if you’re older and had the single jab back before mmr was the main way of vaccination then you should be immune.
