Doctors so unhelpful!

So I’ve been TTC for nearly a year now, and my AF is currently 13 days late. I’ve taken about 12 HPTs since missed period and they are all undisputedly negative. Just called the GPS, the nurse (who was very blunt and quite frankly cold mannered) said they would not offer a blood test and I should retest for 2 months! Surely there’s a risk here of ectopic pregnancies or even something more sinister if I’m not pregnant? Fuming!

So sorry to read this. Sometimes the mind plays awful tricks on us. I hope your period arrives soon. If you have pain maybe try the epu for some support? Xx

That’s the weird thing, there’s no pain, no spotting, not even cramps. I just want answers now it’s so deflating xx

It may well just be that you are wishing so hard that your body is stopping your period from coming. X

I guess that could be true. I’m sure if I was pregnant I’d have had a positive test by now , isn’t nature cruel xx

Really sorry to hear that you’re in this situation. Its hard to get your hopes up each month then be disappointed and I guess it’s worse if you don’t feel you know what’s going on.

I think generally (maybe not always) you’d still test positive with an ectopic as the body still produces HCG. There are lots of reasons you can miss your period and most of them are not sinister. I didn’t have one for the whole 3 years I was at uni due to lots of sport and low body weight. Are you particularly stressed at all? Are they usually very regular?

I think if your period doesn’t return next month and you’re still getting negative tests it might be worth another trip to the GP. They can do blood tests (not pregnancy tests) to establish if there’s any hormonal reason for it. If you’ve not conceived in over a year they might refer you to a fertility clinic.

Thank you for your reply. It’s really defficult every month trying not to get your hopes up, I’m so aware that we can’t try again until AF comes either so that’s a bit annoying too.

I’m usually like clockwork, was due on 16th and was just hoping my hcg levels were too low but I think at 2 weeks late I should be testing positive by now if I were xxx

I know how it feels, I’ve been there myself ttc so really feel for you not knowing what’s happening. I bet it’s happened to some people where it’s taken them ages to get a positive test but more often it’ll be due to other factors.

I know it sounds impossible but try not to stress about it as that can affect your cycles even more. Hope you get some answers soon and you should definitely pursue a fertility referral if you’ve still not had any success after a year of trying. xx

Thank you so much for your advice xx

Maybe you haven’t ovulated this month or your progesterone levels haven’t dropped. This does happen a lot I’m on ovia app and it seems happen all the time not sure why. Drs won’t do anything for like 3 months of missing af. If your not pregnant.

That’s interesting I’ve never thought of that, would that mean just missing a period or arriving late? Xx

in reply to JAL1992

Could be either yeah it’s a worry when you don’t know what’s happening

A late cycle happens sometimes.... There still will be HCG with an ectopic pregnancy so you shouldn't worry about that, you probably just didn't ovulate an so you period will take a while longer to start xxxx

Hello, just wanted to say I hope your period arrives soon to put your mind at rest. Also wanted to add, and I promise I’m not trying to worry you but just sharing my experience, that when I had my ectopic pregnancy last year I had a negative test the month I fell pregnant (February) and didn’t discover I was pregnant until the April as my HCG was slow rising. I’m not saying this is what is happening to you but just wanted to share to raise awareness. Really hope you get an answer soon as the not knowing what’s going on is hard and it can be so frustrating. Take care. X

You’re absolutely right though, I’m shocked the docs won’t do a simple blood test as this is so abnormal for me, it’s unlikely to be ectopic, but in the event that it is then surely it’s dangerous leaving it for 2 months before they’ll do one xx

Hi, Just wanted to add to the 'this happened to me' brigade. When we'd been trying for nearly a year I had a 45 day cycle for no apparent reason. Usually between 28 and 31 so I was sure I must have conceived, but got negative after negative. Period eventually arrived and the next month my cycle went back to normal. This whole thing is so hard to deal with, sometimes it just feels like your body is being a massive traitor. After that cycle I tracked ovulation using opks and temps for about 6 months to try and avoid getting my hopes up unnecessarily and eventually learnt to spot my ovulation symptoms so I don't have to track anymore. But stay strong and hopefully your period will arrive soon and you can get on with your next cycle. Just keep an eye out for pain in your back or abdomen as that might be a symptom of ectopic. Good luck x

there are so many hurdles and complications to making a baby aren’t there, to think when you’re a teenager so focussed on preventing a pregnancy and being confident you’ll be ready one day and it will happen straight away when you are. Then when it finally comes down to it it’s almost like winning the lottery if you get a BFP. I’ll be gutted when AF gets here but I just want to try again xxx

Yeah, it's really crap. There is no getting away from that. On the plus side, you've nearly got to the 12 month point, when you can go to the GP and ask for them to start investigations - obviously for you and your partner to decide at what point you do that but for me it helped to feel like we were moving in the right direction.

I don’t think I’ll get any help as I have a son from prev relationship, but I might see if they’d offer clomid if still no preg by jan xxx
