Falling AMH level

Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone has had a similar experience to me. My AMH level was tested twice in the past couple of years and came back at 11.8 and 13.8. We had a failed round of IVF in March and then an abandoned second round in August due to poor response. Because of my unexpected poor response (I responded normally first time round and got 9 eggs) they wanted to retest my AMH. The result has just come back at 7.38 so it’s dropped quite a lot in the past 18 months or so.

We are seeing the consultant tomorrow so just wondered if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions for what we should be asking.

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately AMH is expected to decline with our age although there can be variations is results which can fluctuate. Mine was around 7.19 when I was tested at the age of 38. Did your drug protocol change compared to the previous round when you did better? Or can they try something to alter the protocol they have tried already? It might be worth discussing DHEA with the consultant, I had a better response after taking it but still never got a bfp unfortunately.xx

Thanks for your reply. I am 33. They did change my drugs so I think they are going to go back to original drugs and also possibly try short protocol. I have heard about DHEA so will ask about that thank you xx

It could just be down to them switching drugs that you didnt have a good response compared to first round but think its defo worth asking the question if your AMH is seen to be falling. There have been a few discussions around this recently on another ladies post.xx

That’s really helpful, thank you! Yes hoping it is just the change in drugs. They went to a gentler stim because my hormone levels went quite high very quickly last time so we’re trying to avoid that. They’ll prob decide not to care about this time and blast the shit out of my ovaries 😂 xx

Ugh the dreaded AMH. I swear it was invented solely to strike fear into our hearts! Try to remember it’s only a number and doesn’t tell the full story. Mine halved in two years and was at 5.7 this time last year, so God only knows what it is now. My consultant has decided not to repeat the test since it won’t change anything anyway (I was on the maximum stims last time round, and luckily responded well) and will just cause more stress. He said he recently helped a woman conceive recently who had an AMH of around 0.2 so although it does make it harder, it’s definitely not impossible and I’d say you’re still at a decent level anyway. The fact you get a nice batch of eggs is important as not all women do regardless of their AMH, so you have that in your favour.

DHEA is worth considering and you could ask about it, though you have to be careful with dosage. Some women have even reported their AMH level rising after taking it though I’ve also seen reports of it varying wildly anyway. It’s an indication, but definitely not the full picture. Good luck with the consultation, hope it helps put your mind at ease 😊 xx

Sorry, I just noticed you put that your second round resulted in a poor response - I’m sorry to hear that 😕 I’m not a doctor obviously but I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion your AMH was the cause. I would be tempted to look at any changes in protocol and what type of drugs were being used. Sometimes it can just be bad luck. They should guide you through that anyway. Hope it goes ok xx

Thank you and that made me laugh about it being invented to strike fear into us lol! It’s so true. You google it and it basically tells you it’s a measure of how quickly your biological clock is ticking!! 🤯 I responded poorly to the abandoned one so we turned it into an IUI round and I actually got a BFP but it was a chemical and I miscarried at 5 weeks. It’s been hard but it was the first time I had ever seen a positive so I guess that’s something. This journey is so long and tiring at times. I’m so used to picking up the phone to bad news! Xx

Hiya, my AMH was 4.8 2 years ago then, when I was retested this year, it’d fallen to 0.9!! It just happens unfortunately. I’m currently 8dp a 2dt, not so patiently waiting to take a pregnancy test to see if it’s worked. Sx

Ugh horrid isn’t it. Best of luck for your cycle 🤞🏻 did you still get a good response this time despite low AMH? I feel like I’m up against the clock now even more!! Xx

Hiya, I got 3 eggs and 1 fertilised. Sadly, it hasn’t worked as I’m now bleeding.
