Public transport after the egg collection?

Kari55 profile image

Hi everyone, I’m just doing our consent forms and it says there that public transport after the egg collection isn’t recommended. Our last IVF was close to home so we drove but this time our clinic is in central London and I think driving through the entire city would be stressful, I don’t think there is any car park by the clinic either. Has any of you use public transport after the EC?

Hi Kari55. Obviously you already know how you coped after egg collection last time. You will have had some form of sedation and lots of prodding and poking about. Would you be able to arrange for someone to pick you up, or could you afford a taxi? Speak to the clinic too, as they can sometimes organise a volunteer driver, worth asking. I hope all goes well for you and you can get something sorted. Diane

Thanks Diane. I think I need to look at taxis or Uber. But it will be expensive and we are trying to literally save every penny as the treatment is very expensive. I had a general anaesthetic last time and felt good afterwards. This time I will only have sedation. We don’t have any family here and I have decided not to share it with friends this time so I think taxi or train are my options. I will ask about it at the clinic too.

Hello as long as you feel ok, you should be fine on train but that only depends on how everything goes, i had sedation and once i woke up i had time to rest and i was ok I didn’t feel poorly until the 3rd day. I would personally mentally prepare for public transport think about time etc but always keep option 2 open like a taxi or uber incase you don’t feel up for it. Aslong as you will have someone with you, you will be fine. Goodluck xxx

You are right, I think I will be aiming for public transport but if I feel well than would have to spend money on a taxi. Still a while to go as I’m only in my prep month. Thanks xxx

Yes its good your preparing well before it’s something to think about especially when you need all the money for treatment. Xx

Thank you, I really hope we will get some luck this time as I won’t be able to afford anymore. There should be some kind of help for us all, in terms of the cost, even small. Unfortunately when I asked my GP for blood tests, they refused to help. xxx

Im thinking of you, I understand. Its a hard journey as it is and this is added stress. I agree there should be some sort of help or payment plan or small amount of funding. GP’s can be funny at times, have you spoken to a different GP? Maybe you could get blood tests done? If there basic ones they should be able to. My GP referred me to fertility treatment after like the 10th visit so i know it can get tiring at times. xx

I have tried 2 different GPs, one of them was willing to do it but then his PA rang me and said that this won’t be possible. I’ve had a blood count done via work recently and the clinic accepted that but the virology, rubella and thyroid antibodies would have to be done via the clinic. We are going on Tuesday to have them done, submit consent forms and have endometrial scratch.

I hope you are doing ok xxx

Oh bless you. Hope you get something sorted. Diane

Are you London based? Taxis can be cheaper than you think during the day . If it’s during the day Addison Lee do off peak rates so it was only £33 for us from a 10m journey. Although it depends on your route as all the turns did make me feel a bit car sick

Yes, I’m in south London, the clinic is in North London. I will check Addison Lee, thanks for that x

I went from London Bridge to Enfield. It took forever You might even get a first time customer discount if you download the app - I saw this advertised somewhere but I already had an account from a long time ago

They are nice comfy cabs too and a reliable service

I was in a predicament about this too. Our taxi would have cost about £70 each way and I wasn't even sure if we could get one as our clinic was quite rural. We decided to stay in a local hotel which was more expense as usual - I had left my car at the clinic anyway and had to collect the next day (my oh doesn't drive). I took a walk around the town after our EC so I think I would have been fine. In our first clinic I had general anaesthetic and they wouldn't let us leave until we'd booked a taxi, but second clinic I had sedation and they didn't mind. I think I would have been fine to drive home later in the day, but it probably wasn't recommended. I think you should be totally fine to get public transport as long as you have someone with you. Good luck with it - I swear the transport to & from the clinic was the most stressful thing we had to deal with!!! xx

It is annoying when the clinic isn’t close to home. I really don’t fancy driving through London as it is so busy and train is so much easier. I’ve always tolerated the anaesthetic very well so I hope it will be the same this time. xx

As others have said I think after you have recovery time, you'll see how you feel and then either go with public transport or get a taxi. I suppose if you feel really crap, a taxi might be a welcome rescue 😊 xx

The first time around when I had EC I was fine bounced back no problem. This time around was like a frickin freight train hit me. My clinic recommended we didn’t take public transport for this reason and also that someone should be with you for 24hrs after EC. If you lived closer I’d volunteer to take you. Good luck with it all.

Oh bless you and thank you so much 😊 If I feel rubbish then we will take the taxi back. xxx

Hi there! I had a general anaesthetic on my first cycle and my clinic was in central London. I had my husband with me but after egg collection, we got a taxi to the tube station, a tube to the train station and then a train out of London. I felt fine doing it all with the help of my oh. I made sure I wore comfy clothes and shoes, took my time and we were lucky in that it wasn't first thing in the morning or around clocking off time so missed the rush on public transport. I hope it all goes well, and good luck for EC xx

Hi Annie, I was hoping that someone who has used public transport after EC will reply! Thank you! Our clinic is just next to tube station and 3 tubes stops away from a train station. I think I will be ok but if I feel unusually rubbish then will take a cab. I hope you are doing well? Xx

Hi Kari! We are in Central London hospital. First time around with egg collection we got the train home, underground and then back out on the mainline, then we walked home from there!! It definitely was do-able, and sounds like your journey will be a lot less than that. However, only you know how you will feel after egg collection.

I would suggest getting a train in and plan to get the train home, and then if you don't feel up to it, you can always organise a taxi if needed. Hope this helps. Sending lots of luck xx

Thanks Glik, it’s very reassuring to know that other people did it so I’m sure I can do it too. I hope your treatment went well xx

You should be ok as long as someone is with you I think.
