Emotions, eggs and Pizza Express.

Well, it’s been a whirlwind of a week! We went for our scan on Saturday to see how my follicles were doing after 8 days of injections. The scan was fine (I’m absolutely amazed by sonographers and how they know what to look for on that black screen of fuzziness). And when I’d got dressed we waited in the office next door for the results. The nurse got everything up on the computer screen to show and us and said there were six follicles of a good size. Just six? I was a teeny bit disappointed to be honest. OK, not just a teeny bit, a lot. I cried. Full on snotty tears (which, by the way, I had to wipe on my sleeve because the nurse didn’t offer me a tissue?! What the eff?!). Anyway, she said that there could be a couple of eggs in each follicle, it’s better than over stimulating, it only takes one, blah blah blah and that is probably be booked in for collection on Monday. We were like “WHAT?! As in the Monday coming up?! IN TWO DAYS?! 48 hours?! That is what she meant. We didn’t realise it would happen so quickly and my sadness was quickly replaced with excitement! After the doctor had looked at my blood results the clinic phoned to say egg collection would indeed be on Monday and that I should take my trigger shot at 9pm that night. Eeeeek!

Monday came around surprisingly quickly and armed with my orange socks (the colour of fertility), Wonder Woman knickers (pointless as I obviously had to take them off anyway but the thought was there), fertility stone bracelet (same as the knickers really) and my grandma’s rosary beads (my Catholic upbringing will always stick with me!) we set off to the clinic. As always, everyone was absolutely lovely, we got shown to a room and I was told that I was first on the list so I needed to get changed into a gown and that the anaesthetist would be in to see me soon. Now, I think I’ve mentioned this before but I do have a tendency to try and social media stalk whoever I think might be involved in our treatment. I didn’t know the name of our anaesthetist so I had to make do with looking at the clinic website’s ‘Meet The Team’ page and trying to guess who it might be. Me and my boyfriend immediately judged them all “He looks about twelve”, “He looks like a serial killer” “He... oh actually he looks normal, I hope we get him”. Of course, I got the serial killer. He was in actual fact a ridiculously lovely man with a beautiful gentle Irish accent. Seriously, he wouldn’t have needed to give me a sedative, he could have told me a fairy tale with that soothing voice and I’d have popped right off to sleep. The doctor was equally as lovely (he pronounced ‘vagina’ as ‘wagina’ which was so cute I could have died) and I felt completely at ease. They both did a bloody good job too, I cannot remember a single thing about the procedure and it didn’t hurt at all AND they got 9 eggs! Whoooop! I came around quite quickly and didn’t feel too groggy, just a bit tired and I had a bit of tummy ache but Buscopan and paracetamol eased it. About 10 minutes later I got dressed, had a brew, a packet of biscuits and a wee and after speaking to the embryologist we set off home.

The next day the embryologist phoned to say 6 of the 9 eggs had fertilised (YAY!) and that they’d phone on Thursday to update us on their progress. I spent last night feeling like I was going to vomit with nerves every time I opened my mouth (well, I say that, it came in waves, I did manage to eat my lasagne at Pizza Express - which by the way is the nicest lasagne I’ve ever had, you should try it). After tea we snuggled on the settee and watched ‘The Wedding Singer’ before going to bed.

I woke up at 7am to do pessary and then tried to get back to sleep to pass time until the clinic phoned but I was too nervous (plus, once you’ve had your finger up your bum in the morning you’re pretty much wide awake) so me and my boyfriend had a brew together before he went to work (I’m a teacher so I don’t start back until next week) and then I passed the time watching last night’s Celebrity Big Brother (if anyone watches it, I hate Jermaine). Anyway, I still hadn’t heard anything so I decided to have a shower and get dressed to keep myself occupied. I had a feeling that the phone would ring as soon as I started brushing my teeth and, OMG, it did! I’m like, totally psychic or something! So, after a crazy week of emotion we now have 2 embryos that are 7 cells, 3 that are 8 cells and 1 that is 3 cells (the embryologist said she doesn’t think that one will catch up but bless it for trying eh?!) We’re really happy so far and all being well we’re booked in for transfer on Saturday morning, eeeek!

Please say a prayer, cross your fingers, salute a magpie, wish on an eyelash or do whatever it is you do for our little embryos and I promise I’ll do the same for all of you 💕🤞🏼🙏🏻

Sending love and positivity to you all 😊💕 xxx
