Scan confusion....

Hey ladies,

So many questions today!!

Originally my GP said I was going to have a 6 week scan after my BFP....

But as it is a natural pregnancy, high HCG and no medical conditions earliest I could get is an 8 week scan....does this mean then that this will include all the tests for downs etc?

I am so confused as NHS website says you have 2 NHS scans 8-14 weeks and 18-20 weeks I think....

I would love if this was the Nuchal scan I am getting at 8 weeks....

Originally I wanted to be scanned as early as possible but seeing other posts I prefer taking my time and seeing (hopefully) more developed baby inside....

Any thoughts?

Hi lovely. Congratulations. I’ve had 2 children natural within a 25 year time span and it’s always at 12-14 weeks and 20-22 weeks. They very rarely scan you at 8 weeks unless they are worried. Of course you can have as many as you like if you pay for them but they won’t do it before 8 weeks. Hope this helps x

Thanks for your response :) . Ok this makes sense then - they must be doing my 8 week scan as I am ex-IVF.......I was just really confused and I am falling into the cracks as discharged from Fertility clinic and now a bit on edge as do not know the normal procedure.....even though I am not normal ;)

Trying to relax as much as possible :)

Thanks for the info this helps make sense of it.

Usually they dont do early scans unless your pregnancy is deemed as high risk. Its usually around the 12 weeks that they do the first scan which is when they look at the nuchal thickness. The IVF clinics usually so an early scan so they can discharge the patient out to their local care afterwards. Some ladies often book a private reassurance scan but again thats not for everyone.xx

Yes I see - so confusing. Seems like they are doing the 'IVF' early scan for me in any case which is good.....even though Fertility have already discharged me....

I think all going well if we get past the 8 week scan hurdle we will pay for a scan in between 8 weeks and NHS one (12-14).....

Aww thanks for getting back - you have so much going on and you still answer my questions :)

I’m 8 weeks no extra early scan for me I mc in Nov and was hoping for an early one but they won’t. Natural pregnancy too. So 4 weeks to wait. The downs test etc is usually done at the 12 week scan but I think they have up til 14 weeks.

in reply to

Thanks for your message - that is so strange they will not give you an early scan to reassure you esp after MC.

I am lucky then by the sounds of it.

A 12 - 14 week wait is actually really hard!

I shouldn't be complaining then waiting 8 weeks.

They said because mc are really common 1-4 they they don’t do it. Not helpful when your anxious but fingers crossed.

in reply to

Well it is a good sign then they must have confidence it is all ok :)

I just need to be calm and wait until my initial scan next week.

You made me grateful to have it with your message! I would be a basket case if I had to wait until 14 weeks.

Hang in there :)

Have you got your midwife appointment booked in? That's normally done around 8 weeks... I would check that you are also getting another scan on the NHS incase they get funny and say you've already had your scan. Although I doubt they will, because if you opt for the tests, you would need bloods taken around 10 weeks and then you have the 12 week scan. You don't have to have the tests done though.. 💙 Xx

oh good point - I will call my GP I think she said she was booking my midwife....so confused! :)

Yeh give them a call and find out if you have an appointment with the midwife, if not, book it in. Unless they want you to wait for the scan? It's confusing because you were doing ivf, but now it's a natural conception.. In ivf I was told to book my midwife appointment after my viability scan. But if I hadn't had ivf, I suppose I would just book an appointment without having a scan.....!! Lol. Def find out if you have an appointment 😁 xx

in reply to elle80

haha yes that is why I am confused - let me call them anyway :)

Apologies to everyone on here for my questions!

Haha. Don't apologise, this forum would be pretty dull if nobody asked questions haha.

My friend is training to be a midwife and she asked me when my 16 week midwife appointment was. Turns out I didn't have one, it should have been booked in on the first appointment, but the midwife didn't for some reason. I wouldn't have known otherwise... Xx

in reply to elle80

yes it is so funny isn't it - they just kind of leave you in limbo....quite scary for first time pregnancy as you have no clue!

Thanks that makes me feel better :)

I will get there eventually! ;)

So good to have a training midwife for support!

Just spoke to Ante Natal and filled out an online form! :) Phew!! xxx

I just had my booking in on tues she told me after my scan at 12 wks to book in next app at 16 weeks I’d prob forget unless they remind me again. Although I’m sure there’s a list of app dates in your folder I’ve hid mine from the kids as they don’t know yet and haven’t had a chance to look I know there’s not as many app when it’s not your first.

8 weeks will be too early to do the nuchal fold scan so I doubt very much that they won’t offer you another scan at 12-14weeks. Where is your 8 week scan- normally at this time, it tends to be done by early pregnancy unit as you’ve been discharged by the fertility clinic.

Normal NHS pregnancy care for a low risk Singleton pregnancy is booking appointment with midwife at 8-10 weeks; they take bloods and ask lots of questions. Scan at 12-14 weeks. 16 week appointment with midwife. Anomaly scan at 20 weeks. Glucose tolerance test at 25 weeeks if you are considered at risk and then every 2-3 weeks midwife/GP appointment until 40 weeks. You don’t normally get another scan unless they want to check growth or something else comes up.

I’ve had some non- invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) privately called a Harmony test. It can only be done after 10 weeks and is an ultrasound and blood test to look at chromosomal abnormalities. Hope you get some clarification. Xxx

Thanks so much! :)

I think it is becoming clear now!

I had my booking appointment with a midwife at 8 weeks then my scan at 12w6d and they did the bloods then as well for downs etc. That was when they did the nuchal measuring too as can't do it sooner. I also had 4 scans prior to that at EPU as I had some bleeding on and off till I was around 10 weeks. I then had my next appointment with midwife at 16 weeks and I booked a private gender scan at 16 weeks too. Congratulations hun :)

Thanks for the summary :) I think once I have the initial scan I will be reassured a bit :)

Hope the rest of your pregnancy progressed well.

It did thank you 😊. I now have a little 8 month old called Noah 😊. I understand the nerves waiting. I'd had a miscarriage 6/7 weeks before I got pregnant and it's scary. Wishing a happy healthy pregnancy, huge congratulations again xx
