Second opinion on low ovarian reserve

Hi ladies after i ve had my first and only IVF in late January 2018. (I’m almost 39) Unfortunately no follicles at all. I ve had meeting with my consultant in mid March 2018. My first period since ivf was over 2 months late and I suffered hot flushes which I mentioned to the doctor. After that she suggested FSH test which come back extremely high (111); also prior ivf I had AMH done which was below 1. In the end I’ve got period at the end of March and fortunately 28 days later another one. So I’m questioning results of FSH. Also, I felt that my treatment at the clinic was bit chaotic. I.e. when consultant said that my reduced ovarian reserve is most likely to be a result of number of laparoscopic ops (I ve got endometriosis) however I ve had only 1 operation to treat my endo cysts prior starting ivf. Sorry for long rumble I just need assurance that there is a point to seek out second opinion as I was told pretty much there is no chance to have my own baby :( ... many thanks for any opinion

Hi lovely, sorry to hear you’ve been having a tough time with treatment and feeling discouraged. I’ve only ever heard of fsh being that low as people enter menopause, so from my limited knowledge it isn’t looking good. Mine was 22.5 and amh 2.7 and my consultants were very negative. And here we are going to do round 5 soon and only got one frostie. The idea of donor eggs is becoming much more real now.

Fsh can definitely vary a lot, so it’s definitely worth retesting that to see if it is different another month. And dhea is something to consider as it is meant to hope low ovarian reserve and also lowers fsh. Lowering the fsh doesn’t actually help much other than maybe improves response to the stims when you inject.

I’d say it’s always worth a second opinion too, so that you can make your own mind up, especially if you were less impressed with your clinic. you could try a clinic that specialises in low reserve xx

I would definitely get a second test. And independent advice. However I would also recommend that you start to consider donor eggs. It means you can still be pregnant and give birth to a baby which will be influenced genetically by being nurtured in your womb.

If you have no follicles then it is highly likely that you will gain no eggs from IVF. Also, as we get older sadly the quality declines. I kind of wish I had known about donor eggs a few years ago but I guess we all have to go on our own journeys.

Good luck with your journey xxx

Thank you for your reply. I find it sometimes difficult to keep my rational head on and keep searching for new avenues. I cannot make my head around donor egg option yet - need to read and talk about it more. Many thanks again as this was my first post and i feel relieved that I’m not in this by myself (well and my partner ;)

This is a great site for support. Everyone is friendly and supportive as well as very sharing and caring. And sometimes it's even positive!

For me donor egg became a no brainer as I want so much to have a baby and experience the full shebang. I also read recently about the fact that we do input genetically - even in just a small way of enabling and disabling certain genetic triggers. For me I don't really care, they will certainly be my baby and if my own eggs are not up to it and a little beyond their best then I welcome donor.

It does take a little thought and discussion though.

You will find you are stronger than you ever imagined you could be and the support here is great.

Xxx

Hello, I have low ovarian reserve and at first I was really scared and upset but it’s better to know your options and that gives you the power to work out what you can do.

I had AMH 0.4 and FSH 34, was told to keep trying as it wasn’t impossible to conceive naturally but it would be very difficult, however we had already been trying for almost 4 years so I knew I had to do something. I was told about egg donation and after a meeting with a wonderful doctor ( after seeing Some truly awful insensitive ones) that is the option I have decided to go with and now my head is around it I’m excited ! I have my second scan on Thursday and going to start treatment from then.

Please message if you want to chat or have any questions? I didn’t even know low ovarian reserves were a thing untill I was told I had it so I totally get how u must be feeling xxxxx

Hi - many thanks for your reply. Firstly at the beginning of my ivf journey i thought that my biggest problem is my severe endometriosis on my ovaries etc.... at the beginning i was put on clomid for 6 months and every months i had scan to monitor folicoles etc. And they were there in ok numbers and sizes. I feel like i missed on my opportunity then and should push straight for ivf ..((
