Hi Ladies 😊. I have a quick question, has anyone had a hysteroscopy (spelling) and what can I expect? Is it painful? Bleed? Thanks and have a great sunday

Me too...in 3 weeks time so I have no advice. Slightly terrified by the suggestion you take a paracetamol an hour before and get no pain relief 😩.

I’ve had 2; one was to treat a fibroid/polyp which wasn’t there, another one recently with a laparoscopy as I had many symptoms of endometriosis ( I have endometriosis had some treated in June but came back after my early miscarriage) both of my hysteroscopys were under general anaesthetic. So I can’t comment on the pain side plus it would be different for me as I have endometriosis and any pelvic examinations are severely painful. I think most women take painkillers an hour prior to the procedure and are are fine.I bled during it as I had a biopsy., they put a towel between my legs. I have no dignity 😂 You might spot a few days afterwards so you might need padsas tampons risk infection. You may also experience some cramping but standard painkillers should ease it 😊 And you might need to rest a few days depending on what they do.

Good luck hope it goes well xoxo

Thanks Jess. Dignity and fertility treatment don’t seem to go hand in hand 😂. I hope that you are doing ok x

I had a hysteroscopy a few weeks ago and I’m not going to lie it was quite painful but is over quite quickly. Take some pain killers an hr before you go to have it if your going to be awake during it. I had little bleeding straight after but then starting bleeding heavy the next day which I know now was AF xx

I had one in 2013 for severe grade pre cancerous cell changes. However mine also combined a biopsy and lletz procedure so I can’t comment on the hysteroscopy by itself. They gave me 4 injections into my cervix for local anaesthetic. I was awake and they let me listen to music on my headphones as I was very anxious. It wasn’t very nice, more uncomfortable than painful though. Yes I did bleed afterwards and spotted for about a week. It didn’t delay my next period. I want to wish you luck with yours, sorry I can’t be of further help xx

I had a few months ago, I bled for a few days and then was fine. However, it was quite painful for me the day of (a few hours after, I felt the pain) but that was because they said I reacted to the anesthesia. They gave me some pain killers, which I only took that one time and was fine after. I had some implantation cuts at the same time, as well.

Best of luck xx

I have had 2 hysteroscopy’s. The first was under anaesthetic and so I didn’t feel anything. A little sore when I woke up, but totally controllable with some over the counter painkillers. I only had a small amount of bleeding afterwards. The second one I was awake for. I look paracetamol an hour before. It was pretty uncomfortable (think bad period pains) but over pretty quickly (I reckon about 20mins). Hope it goes well x

Thank You so much for all your replies, at least now I have a better idea of what to expect. Eeeeek, I am rather nervous and will keep pain killers at hand. The dr made is sounds so quick and simple and he said no anaesthetic necessary.... I had a sneaky idea that there was a bit more to the “simple process” he made it out to be. Did you all get your results straight away or did you have to wait a few days?

in reply to

Just to add it is YOUR choice whether or not you feel more comfortable having anaesthetic with it. I refused my second one without anaesthetic; they fully supported my decision. As I said before I do have endometriosis which does make simple procedures painful whereas most women would find it just uncomfortable and not too bad.

I got my results straight away ; the biopsy I have to wait for and the surgeon will write regarding these results.

Good luck xoxo

I didn’t have any anaesthetic for mine, it is over quick and although I said it’s painful a bit of deep breathing does help. You could always ask though if you wanted some, initially they told me all looks okay but my biopsy results are up to 4 weeks xx

Oh great, thanks so much Jess for the info. It didnt even cross my mind to ask for anaesthetic because the Dr made it sound like no big deal. I am a real baby (excuse the punn) when it comes to pain so I hope I can handle it 🤞. Lets see what Tuesday holds. In a way I am hoping they find something so at least we have a reason for all of this but on the other hand I am so petrified they find something that they unable to fix.

Anyways, Jess good luck with your results. Crossing fingers and toes that everything will work out ok for you. You have had a tough time and I am thinking of you.

in reply to

Thank you. I think we have all been through it. It’s a difficult journey 🤦🏼‍♀️ but worth fighting for 😘

No worries. If you really feel like can’t do it without anaesthetic that is fair enough and the staff will be understanding; it won’t affect your care. I will say as I refused it without anaesthetic it meant a delay; I had to wait to get an op date via day surgery, but to me it was worth it 😊 plus I had a laparoscopy so it made sense to do both at the same time.

Good luck xoxo

I had mine done after GA due to the fact they were dilating my cervix, taking biopsies, implantation cuts and were considering a light D & C. I didn't find the after effects of the GA great if I'm honest but a few hours later I was totally fine and didn't even suffer too much from bleeding and cramp afterwards. I spoke to a consultant locally and he said he did them without GA and most women tolerate them well. Hope it goes well!xx

in reply toCinderella5

Thanks so much. As far as I know he just wants to check if they can find anything, dont think he will be doing anything else for the moment. Hopefully I can tolerate it too 🙈. Thanks so much for your message xx

Hi hunny, I didn’t find mine to bad at all, I took some paracetamol an hour before, you could feel some pressure when they put the dye through, but it felt like period cramp, but a few hours later the cramps left me. I didn’t bleed, but take a pad with you, otherwise they give you an NHS one which is like wearing a nappy 😂!! X x

Are you maybe getting Hysterosalpinogram and hysteroscopy mixed up? Hysterosalpinogram is where they insert the dye through the tubes. Neither are particularly enjoyable though 😂 xx

Hi

It’s natural to worry about the unknown. We’ve all been there, done it, probably got the t-shirt, the book and now the DVD!!

I had hysteroscopy done last year, once under local anaesthetic which was a little uncomfortable, but breathing through it and staying relaxed and calm will get you through it. I remember the nurse trying to distract me and asking me if I enjoy watching soaps like Eastenders and I just ignored her! The nurses are great and comforting and hold your hand.

Unfortunately the doctor couldn’t see the polyp when she “went in(!)” again with the “clippers(!)” so referred me to have it under general anaesthetic.

I was more nervous about the anaesthetic than anything else. Was over in no time. I just vomited after coming round from the anaesthetic but was home after 6 hours in the hospital. Rest up at home for the rest of the day.

There was some bleeding for a few days. I got pregnant after that, but at an 8 week scan there was no heartbeat, but was chuffed that we got that far.

We can all look back and give ourselves a deserved pat on the backs for being such brave “sisters” and doing whatever it takes to get pregnant!

Oops sorry for long message.

All the best. You’ll be fine.

Thank you so much for your message 😊. To be honest the Dr asked me if I had it done in the past as he cant find anything in my file, I have had so much done that I cannot actually remember. I might remember once im there having it done that its all very familiar but at the moment I am just bracing myself for whats to come.

I am pleased that you managed to get as far as a positive result but so sorry it wasnt the happy ending. Sending lots of positive energy your way and look forward to reading your good news soon xxxx

Thank you for your positive energy. We all need a bit of that at whatever stage we are at on the fertility journey.

Hi, I’ve had two - first one hurt, second one didn’t hurt at all. Both had some bleeding afterwards and the first seemed to trigger my period (which was only a few days away). It is over very quickly, as others have said and deep breathing does help. Hope it goes well tomorrow, oh and if you’re in too much pain they’d probably stop and suggest rescheduling with anaesthetic. That’s what happened with me the first time but I just wanted to get it over with. Think short term pain, long term gain!! Lots of luck xxx

in reply to7AVA

Thank You so much! Hopefully mine will be like your second one 😅. I dont do well with pain but I will try my very best to get through it so that it is over and done with.

Tell them at the start that you’re not good with pain. Apparently it’s something to do with how fast they go in (?) that’s what the doctor said to me the second time. If they go in slowly, it should be ok. All the very best - give yourself a treat afterwards. Are you going with someone? X

in reply to7AVA

Ok Thanks I will definately tell them now. No, I am going on my own as I told my hubby to rather save his time off work for the Next round of IVF. The Dr made it sound like I was just going in for a manicure 😂.

You’ll be fine. I took my mum the second time as I was the same and wanted boyfriend to save time off for ivf. Xxx

How did you get on today? X

in reply to7AVA

Aww how nice of you to ask 😊. Its went well. I took everyones advice, I took panadol beforehand and I did lots of deep breathing. It was over before I knew it. I bled a tiny bit and the only thing is im absolutely exhausted, all i want to do is sleep. But it really wasnt bad at all. He didnt find anything abnormal so I dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. Thanks again for asking xxx have a great evening
