Should I go for an earlier scan?

Waitingforourmiracle profile image

So our clinic called me yesterday to book us in for our scan. They tried to get me in for Thursday 22nd march but are fully booked. The first date they can get me in for is Tuesday 27th march which will put me at 7+4.

Now because I had a mmc before a) I'm more anxious for the scan and b) I was seen for my d&c by my local hospitals early pregnancy unit. My local hospital said if I was to get pregnant again then they are happy to do an early scan for me - I think these can be done from 6 weeks. So I'm tempted to call them and book in for one. Hubby said it's totally up to me but he doesn't see the point when our clinics scan is about a week and a half later but I just really don't know what to do. I think that knowing I could be being scanned by the clinic 5 days earlier but can't as they are full is making me want to go for an early scan at my hospital but then I think is 6 weeks too early to see baby and will it just give me a week and a half of worry?

What would you do?

Gosh I know how you must feel, if you wait for the 7 week one you've got less chance of putting yourself through stress and more chance if seeing what needs to be seen. Iv been through getting scanned at 6 weeks a few times and times things weren't seen but ended up fine and times things we're seen including heartbeat and weren't fine so it's a 50 50 really wish you all the best with whatever you decide to do

Oh ok - it's good to hear from someone that's done it so thank you so much for replying.

Maybe it is best to hold off. I think my current issue is that I only work weds afternoon, all day Thursday and Friday morning and so I haven't been at work since I got my bfp and the baby is just on my mind 24/7 and even though I'm exhausted I'm struggling to get to sleep at night and the waking early. Think once I'm back at work tomorrow it will be better and my mind will be more occupied and hopefully I'll worry less.

I think if I had a scan at 6 weeks and things weren't seen I'd really worry that week and a half whereas if I didn't have the 6 week scan I'd probably just spend that week and a half excited for the clinics one to get here x

Yes work will help, also it's better to be excited for your scan than potentially worrying about the next. You just don't know as bubus develop at different rates. Diane once told me 7 weeks is her best time for a scan and she's got the expertise, wish you luck lovely just try keep occupied and your sleep is a symptom also I believe so many times when I'm pregnant I get insomnia. 💗🤗😘

Ah that's reassuring to hear about the sleep as don't feel I have many symptoms aside from thrush, slight nausea (although that's died down since Sunday) and bloating.

Thrush is supposed to be a symptom iv never had it while pregnant do you take probiotics? Bloating is a symptom nausea can come and go. 💗🤗😘

I would definitely book in. I was under the recurrent miscarriage clinic and had a scan at 6 weeks with them, where we managed to see a little tiny fluttering heartbeat 💗 my scan with the ivf clinic was 9 days later and I still worried in between but having seen the first scan I wasn’t as emotional as I probably would have been. I know early scans aren’t for everyone though xxxx

Firstly many congratulations.

I had an early scan at 6 weeks and could see the heartbeat etc but sadly we miscarried. I would feel incredibly nervous of going for scans period and I can empathise fully with how you are feeling.

I think you need to go with what your instincts are telling you. What I mean is if it makes you feel less stressed then go for an early scan if that adds stress then maybe wait until the later scan. Does that make sense?

You do what is right for you.

i had an early scan at just 6 weeks due to a bleed and they could see no heartbeat and prepared us to miscarry. Follow up scan was booked a week later and heart beat was there, now 30 weeks. It was the worst week of my life and if i were to go back i wouldn't do it then. I guess my advice is if you go for the early one dont get yourself too worked up if the heartbeat isn't there yet. X

Thanks ladies for all your advice. I've decided to hold off as I think I'd feel worse if we went at 6 weeks and didn't see a heartbeat.

I'm hoping (and if anyone knows this to be true then great) that missed miscarriages are so rare that it would be very unlikely I'd have another missed one. So in my head I'm telling myself if I get no bleeding prior to the scan then everything should be ok
