Pregnant after 4 miscarriages, what next

I have found out that I am pregnant, after 4 miscarriages in the last 18 months I’m not sure what to do next. My last period was 3rd Jan and before that was 8th December. Is it possible to have a positive test a week before period is due? My last period in Jan was very short (3 days). Ive not told my husband in case the worse happens but no idea what to do now. Thank you in advance

Go to docs tell them your concerns maybe they will give you progesterone to support. Have you been to recurrent misscarriage clinic?

Contacted Docs and receptionist useless. I was told if it’s going to happen there is nothing that can stop it

Hmmm, a receptionist with a medical degree?!! I hope she gave you a phone number for the midwifery team at least?

i can’t believe you were told that - why are dr receptionists such dragons?!

could you at least get an emergency telephone consultation with a GP? or do you have an out of hours service? i am speechless you were spoken to like that.

I was told that I could have an appointment next Month and same for midwife. I was then asked why I wanted an appointment...

Hopefully you took the appointment anyway so you have got one for future use as it were! You are within your rights to refuse to say what you want an appointment for to a receptionist, just say it is a confidential matter. Maybe try ringing again and asking for a phone appointment or to be put on a cancellation list if an appointment comes up sooner. Also, in my area there is a midwife line that is staffed 9-10am every working day for you to ring with any queries, maybe ask if there’s anything like this in your area?

I have called the EPAU at local hospital and am booked in. Also called the doctors back to say how awful I was spoken to.

Hi Louise, so sorry to hear of your miscarriages, I have had 4 too. Glad to hear you are booked in at the EPU and hopefully they can offer some reassurance. Please ask them to refer you to the local Recurrent Miscarriage Clinic as you are entitled to this after 3 miscarriages (2 if over 40). I'm not sure how many tests they will be able to run while you are pregnant but they should be able to pick up anything that might need specific treatment e.g. blood clotting disorder, hormone levels. Unfortunately, even if this is diagnosed they usually won't start prescribing medication until a viable pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasound c. 6-7 weeks so you might have to wait a bit longer, but at least you will be in the system by then and get the additional support you need.

Thank you for your reply. It’s so difficult and draining. I have coeliac disease and miscarriage is apparently a side effect.

I’m also booked in at GPs tomorrow so will see how goes.

Thank you to everyone for your kind words x

Hi, definitely get to epu. You could be further on than you think. I know someone who didn't realise she was pregnant until she felt the baby kick as she was still having periods. So it could be your lighter period was because you were already pregnant as otherwise it is very easy to get a positive hpt, even if you normally have a shorter cycle . You are only on cycle day 23.

Good luck

X
