HSG experiences

Hi everyone, hope you're all well. I know this has probably been discussed a zillion times already but just wondered if anyone could share their experience of an HSG? I have mine booked for next week. Excited that finally things are moving forwards and hopefully a step closer to finding out exactly what is going on but a little nervous also xxx

Take some paracetamol about an hour before. It’s a bit uncomfortable but you’ll be fine xx

Thank you hun, I really appreciate your honesty. I was told by our Consultant it can be painful. Will make sure I dose up on pain killers. I've scheduled it on my day off so I can have an afternoon in front of the TV with a duvet if needed! Xxx

It is a bit uncomfortable, more than I thought it would be, but the worst bit is over in a matter of seconds. You'll definitely be ok and it's worth it just to get another 'thing to do' ticked off your list. Good luck xx

Thanks lovely, I'm hoping it will give us some answers so in a way I'm looking forward to getting it over with so we can get the ball rolling on the next step. It's a morning appointment so not much time to get nervous on the day Xxx

Thanks lovely, I'll make sure I take some! Silly question... But do you know how soon we can start TTC after HSG? I have a transvaginal and abdominal ultrasound scheduled 2 days later (purely coincidence they are booked in the same week) xxx

I don't remember them saying we couldn't ttc after it x

My experience wasn't the best but this was due to me having a tilted cervix which makes any investigation up there more difficult. I knew it would be more painful for me though as my smear tests take ages too. If you can manage a smear test you'll be ok with this too. Just take paracetamol beforehand. Good luck In your journey x

Mine was fine, a sharp period like cramp when the dye went in but it was over in a few seconds and we were told to ttc as normal after. Good luck. Xxx

I didn’t take anything. The clinic wanted me to go under as I have an awkward cervix and tilted uterus. I refused to go under. They made me let the anaesthesia person stay in the room ready”just in case”. It was very uncomfortable! But it was over quickly and I treated myself to a fancy lunch!

They kept calling me tough...but I had egg collection done without drugs too! Now that hurt!

Well done you!! Thanks for your response, I like the idea if a fancy lunch after, may do the same! Wishing you all the best with your journey xxx

Hi Poppy149. Like the others I found it quite uncomfortable. I wasn’t advised to take any pain killers so it took me by surprise but I survived! It is over pretty quickly and some strong deep yoga style breaths helped! A few paracetamol before and tough woman attitude and you’ll be fine! Most men on the other hand would probably pass out 😉

Thanks lovely! Great advice with the yoga breathing I will try that. Wishing you every success with your journey xxx

In my experience it was uncomfortable; like a gradual period pain as the dye goes in and it can continue to ache for a short time. It then settles!

Be prepared to turn over onto your tummy also, that was a surprise for me.

Poppy, looks like you have already had boat loads of advice so you are going to be super prepared but thought I might as well add my experience to the mix.

I had a HSG on 01 Nov, I didn’t know what to expect at all. The nurses were very kind and professional but also needed to rush me slightly due to an urgent X-ray which needed to take place straight after me.

The procedure itself wasn’t hugely comfortable, I held the nurses hands and did a bit of controlled breathing but that was all. Not as bad as some period pains I’ve had in the past. The thing is that they are filling you with dye / liquid quickly so you do feel bloated and crampy.

I recovered quickly but enjoyed the excuse to have a lazy afternoon.

Every woman’s experience will be different, but this was mine! My best advice would be to relax, and make time for yourself afterwards.

Best of luck for next week. Xx

Just looking forward to getting it over with now. Will ensure I take pain killers. May even ask my GP for somwthing to help me relax as i'm not great going into hospital. Wishing you every success with your journey xxx

I’d suggest some pain killers before hand, I found I felt very uncomfortable, I had some tummy pains for a few hours after. Cross between bloatedness and period pains. Hope it goes ok, good luck xx

My experience wasn’t very good, I screamed through most of it and found it really uncomfortable. It’s over pretty quick they just need to get the dye in and get the results. Take some tablets before hand. A friend had hers and she said it was uncomfortable but it was ok xx
