FET - embryos great on day 3 cancelled transfer day 5

I’m a totally devastated soon to be 40 three times unlucky not pregnant woman. I think I must be in slight shock but worse still I’m having to try so hard not to be angry. On day three the clinic rang said I had one lovely 8 cell grade one and a nine cell grade 2 and that there was no reason not to do the transfer that day. I thought to myself hang on aren’t we trying for a day 5? The lady was very nice and explained the only reason to wait would be to have more information by them not surviving. So even though my husband welled up saying let’s put them in, poor fella is as distraught as I am at this stage, I thought no we need to know are the eggs the problem. But now hearing the awful news this morning I’m not sure what it means? Does anyone have success with their eggs after three failing like this (the third was only a little straggler but you never know)? Should I ask for them to be chromosome tested? Is donor egg the only other option for me to become pregnant? Sorry if I am a bit all over the place, love any advice anyone can offer

You could have chromosome testing, karotyping is done through a blood test for both partners and is relatively cheap (a few hundred) in the scale of fertility testing. It’s only a 2% chance this is the problem though. If you do go down this route, make sure you prepare yourself for the possible answers. Karotyping gave me and my husband the answer but we weren’t really prepared for it as we had been told it was so likely to be negative. Having a chromosome problem makes your chance of having a live birth a lot lot lower and so it’s not an answer you really want to hear. But it does open a more definite door to the possibility of donor eggs/sperm.

It may be egg quality, however it may also be sperm quality. I've had 3 fresh rounds, round 1 produced 9 fertilised eggs of which only 2 made it to blast. That was my best round, with all others failing too. NHS always said it was my eggs and all sperm tests were normal. I've had 6 miscarriages in total so found it hard to believe it was all egg quality.

Private consultant looked at the grading sheets and thought there was a sperm issue as from day 3 something triggers in the sperm to carry on the growth, as I had a lot die off after day 3 that's why he thought it may also be sperm. We paid private for sperm comet test which is not available on NHS. This showed high fragmentation which is linked to miscarriage. In a nutshell younger eggs can repair sperm damage, older eggs find this harder to do. If my hubby had perfect sperm there would not have been an issue 4 years ago when the miscarriages started, and he would be ok with someone younger, so hubby is on vitamin tablets to help improve quality and we are now about to start our first Doner cycle. I'm 40 in 2 weeks x

That’s really interesting thank you so much for your reply. I’m going to look into the sperm side of things. I wish you the very best of luck with DE. My friend is 43 with various fertility issues and just had first time success with DE in Barcelona and I hear so many success stories so I think it sounds great.

It's strange how fate turns around things. And we still feel we could do something to change it. Really pleased to hear that . I know staying positive all through us not possible but trying is possible . And surrender to all mighty . Everything will b fine
