Follicle Count

Hi ladies,

Has anyone had a follicle count before any treatment started?

I was told i had low reserve for my age which came as a shock.

Just wondering if anyone had this before treatment and how it affected their count once treatment started? x

Hi Lauren, I was told I have reserve and before any treatment, the dr checked my follicle count as being 6-7, then I went back a week later it was 10 before treatment and then when starting treatment he saw 13, which has been both a shock to us all in a good way. So don't worry too much about the follicles, they will monitor your follicles once you begin any treatment, and the number can vary at each stage.

Hi Lauren, I wouldn’t worry too much about follicle count as it can change from month to month. I was diagnosed with low AMH for my age and durning my first IVF cycle (short protocol) I had 8 eggs retrieved, on my second cycle (at different clinic) I was put on the long 21 day protocol and they retrieved 11 eggs but I had about 16 follicles growing but some were too small for collection and on my most recent cycle I had 14 eggs collected 😳 which the clinic were very surprised about. I was told for my AMH I’d should only expect to get around 6 eggs!! X

Do you have any more info on this? I have low amh & only got 3 eggs collected on short protocol. Was pretty disappointed as my follicle count was at least 9 a few months before ivf starting with no stimms! Good to know long protocol worked better for you. What was your amh level? X

Hi Clara, I had 3 AMH tests done my first one the level was 11.1 the second came back as 20 and my last one which was taken 2 years ago was 8.1 and this was within the space of 2 years (I’m 33) I suspect the second level was wrong. I have no idea what my level is now as, at my new clinic the consultant went more on what he could see on my follicle scan than my test results as, they were not corresponding with what my body was doing. I know everyone says it but try not to get hung up on numbers it only does take one and it’s the quality that counts and not the number. If you want to know anything else then just shout x

Mine was in line with the amh result. About 6 on baseline scan and 8 were there for EC. Amh was 8.8.

I have low amh diagnosed by blood test,, I can’t remember what my actual number is though because I was too busy crying when he told me I had a 2% chance of conceiving naturally (I also have a blocked tube). I didn’t have an actual folice count before I started but I ended up with 6 eggs from 9 follicles. One of those 6 fertilitised and now I’m in the very very early days of pregnancy, I still have a long way to go, but hopefully it gives you hope that it’s not always about the number, as annoying as it is when people keep saying this, you really do only need one. Good luck 🌈

Hi, I'd like to add to the above and say that I too was told I had low Amh at the very start of treatment. However when I started stims they all popped out and I ended up with 17 eggs collected! So I would try not to get discouraged by this (I know thats easier said than done) as who knows what will happen once you start, plus they can increase the dose if they think you're not responding as they would like . Good luck xxx

Hi Lauren, I had a follicle count before treatment started. I think they always do this scan along with a blood test to check you AFH levels. They use these results to determine what meds to give you so your treatment will be tailored to you. Its all about egg and spem quality so try not to worry about the count too much. I actually got pregnant from my 1 egg that fertilised so its not always about high numbers. Good luck xxx
