I had my first fertility appointment at the hospital this week and the gynie advised the next step is a HSG to check my tubes and also he mentioned 'a check for endometriosis' and he will do both at the same time, describing it as an 'operation'.
My understanding for a dye test is that you stay awake? Would he procedure to check for endo be a laparoscopy? In the rush of it all, I forgot to ask!!

I can't really advise on the lap side of things but I think that's done under a general. The hsg is done while you're awake, in fact you only need take paracetamol beforehand. Maybe if you're under for the lap he'll do the hsg at the same time too. Good luck xx
Hi! I had this done last Thursday and also had ovarian drilling done, so I was put under anaesthetic and had a laparoscopy and they did it all at the same time with 3 little incisions! I hope this helps
Yep had an afternoon day surgery appointment and was home by 7pm the same day and I was told to have 2 weeks off work! The first few days I was sore and uncomfortable but nothing paracetamol wouldn't help and I'm starting to feel much more myself over the last 2 days x
Laparoscopy are done under general. I had them all done when I was asleep and a hysteroscopy as well. I would definitely have them all done as it's the gold standard in investigations. X
Laparoscopy's are done under general through keyhole surgery. I had it done 3 years ago. It sounds good that they want to check for endo to, i definitely think it's a good investigation to have done. Lots of luck x
I had the same choice to make in march- I was offered an HSG, laparoscopy and dye and to check for endometriosis( I had chronic pain lower left abdominal side,) or go straight for private IVF( can't access NHS funding for IVF) . We decided to go for the laparoscopy- it was the best decision we have ever made! I had my laparoscopy last month and our consultant found and removed endometriosis implants from my pouch of Douglas. After 5 years and 10 months we finally got a proper diagnosis for infertility I have endometriosis.
Laparoscopy is done under general anesthesitic. It is usually down as an outpatient day surgery unit-which is great as less likely your op will be canceled due to lack of beds available.
Personally I would definitely recommend you have the laparoscopy- even if you don't have endometriosis it's nice to have that ruled out ( it can only be diagnosed by laparoscopy and doesn't show up on ultrasounds).
If you have any questions on the laparoscopy feel free to ask me.
I had lap and dye in and out in same day. I had a bit of work done to un kink my left tube I was off work a week as was a little sore. Not a bad thing would have again... having hysteroscopy now in September to look inside the womb rather than the outside!
I had a lap and dye done last year it was only a day admission I was home by early evening . They tend to be more thorough when doing this procedure rather than just having the dye test on its own as they can take a good look around whilst your asleep any questions please feel free to ask x
Thanks for all your answers ladies! It's really appreciated. Had my letter through already and procedure scheduled for less than 2 weeks' time!
Has anybody had the procedure via the NHS? I have to go in next week for a pre-op assessment. As I've never had anaesthetic or anything before, can anybody gov me a heads up on what I can expect?
I had mine done via the NHS the pre-op they go through the procedure with you explain the risks etc (standard NHS) they test for mrsa and also do a blood test (sorry can't remember for this is for) and you sign the consent form it's really straight forward and nothing to worry about x
Ah brill, thanks for this. I was worrying a little as on the letter it said this may take up to 3 hours!! I wonder if they tell everyone to be in at a certain time and work their way through a list. x
I was there quite a while about 2 hours I think I first saw like a healthcare assistant who took my blood pressure and did the swabs for MRSA, then I saw a Sister who went through the procedure and did the blood test and then I saw the consultant I had to wait a little while in between seeing each person thinks that what takes up a lot of the time x
Yay great news! Just to say I conceived first month after the test! Little story of hope!
I never had a pre op so can't answer that but all the best with it xoxo
Thanks early days and my scan is next week ( but still it's further than we have ever got in 6 years).
I had my tubes checked- they were clear, my ovaries were looked at they were normal, and he checked for and found endometriosis which he removed the implants and voila!
Good luck with yours- you will have extra chance of falling afterwards ( provided tubes are clear) Xoxo
The anaesthetic is fine- everyone is the theatre is lovely they expect you to be nervous. Its not as scary as you might think. I was given paracetamol before Surgery. You will be asked your name and date of birth hundreds of times!!!! They a canula into your wrist and you will feel a cold sensation going up your arm. Within seconds you will be fast asleep!!! They will monitor you and you will be totally safe. One minute you fall asleep and then it's like no time has passed and you wake up. Its almost feels like the op never happened! You will feel tired and groggy afterwards this is normal. And if they do any treatment they will offer you morphin to help pain. You will be offered something to drink and eat afterwards and when you can manage eating and drinking and passing urine ok you are free to go home. You will need an adult with you for the first 24 hours after operation. Take pads with you in case you bleed or you'll be offered NHS 1950's pads which are horrible!!!! Rest even tho the incisions are small it is still surgery. I have been under twice and honestly it's nothing to worry about xoxo Good luck xoxo
Hi ladies, hope everyone is well. Just needed a quick vent really... I was in for my lap and dye today, knew it was an afternoon surgery, I was last on the list (of course), nil by mouth alllll day, only to be told (once in my gown) - sorry we're running late, your surgery is cancelled for today!! I know it can be rescheduled it's just a pain and so frustrating... you wait so long in the hope of some answers only to find that the answers aren't coming today! So deflating....
