Unexpected IVF starts in under a week...

Hi all,

After being told that the NHS will not fund an IVF cycle due to not having enough follicles (1 to be exact) they then unexpectedly changed their mind. They called to say they'd give us a shot... In less than a week!

A big surprise - we are delighted, but health wise I don't feel ready at all! I havent been eating particularly well, or exercising due to a recent laparoscopy.

What you recommend I do with less than a week to go???? All advice gratefully received!!

Hello. Great news. Start drinking water. Eating fruit and veg. Small portions. Start taking folic acid. And swimming is a good exercise. But actually walking places us just as good. Good luck. Xxx

Okay, just healthy living then? Thank you xx

Yes basically. You could also ask about taking baby aspirin. Helps to stop clots forming. I'm on that. And do stuff you enjoy doing so you stay busy. Xxx

It seems really strange what you are going through.

Who rang you? The referring Dr, the CCG who fund it or the clinic?

If they are giving you an entitlement then I can't see why you should be forced into when you take it. They make it sound like they are doing you a favour, when in reality, you might be eligible for it anyway.

I think in a lot of ways, you have to be mentally and physically ready to start IVF.

How long ago was your op? Some clinics will have wanted you to recover properly before starting IVF.

A lot of clinic's will want to do their own tests for baseline scan, amh and sperm, then there is the hfea dictating that certain tests have to be valid for an amount of time for when your treatment would start and then there is the body, when it wants to do stuff so that they can work out treatment plans and appointments.

What I'm trying to say is, unless your body and tests are all at the point when the clinic would normally start a protocol, then you probably have some breathing space to prepare.

If it's not the clinic dictating when, then it might be worth calling them to say you've been given the go ahead, but your not quite ready and could you attend to discuss suitable times. My funding was approved in October 2014 and we have to have used it by April 2016.

If it's a case of there is no choice, then I would accept it, but look to make a complaint or appeal with the reasons they have given you!

Let us know how you get on...x

Hey Holli,

So the Dr at the hospital we are under called to tell us. The rules of the CCG we are under stipulate that we can't have IVF if we have less than 4 follicles. But due to my operation I think the hospital discussed our case abs decided to give us a shot anyway - as the lap may have disturbed them.

The reason for the rush is because my periods have been stopped by an injection which puts me into a forced menopause & should only have 6 months of. So far I've have 7 and so I think they just thought 'let's start now' - which we are happy to do! I hate waiting & this moment has now been 2 years coming.

I just hope my follicles pull out and work xx

Fair enough...

Lots of water

Low carbs, high protein

Some acupuncture may assist during stimming

Relaxing and not stressing

I've done a big write up previously, but can't find it now :-(

That's great news but why are they trying to rush you into it?? Surely if they've reversed the decision it's up to you when you start xx

It's a bit of an unusual circumstance I think - I've been on zoladex for 7 months (recommended only 6) and they didn't want me to carry on with that so they're starting. Which we're glad about - need to get going with our lives after 2 years of hell!

Aah I see. I'd just say eat as healthily as you can and try and relax maybe book yourself a nice massage or something before you start. Good luck! Xx

Hooray, no time to worry for you! Ready, steady, go!!! Be sensible with your diet and exercise and tons of water and do ask about baby aspirin. Don't start a new exercise regiment that may traumatise yourself! Hooray!
