*Sensitive* Big baby at 12 week scan - due to IVF??

Just had my NHS 12 week scan and all was good. Baby is definitely in there and has all the limbs and bits it should have.

However as I've got through infertility and IVF I have to worry about something! So the baby was basically dated over a week bigger than what I should be. Apparently this is normal for IVF babies, and because it's IVF and they know for sure the date of fertilisation they won't change my due date.

Is this common? I've asked Dr Google, but I trust everyone on here more.

This is my first pregnancy (that's latest this long) so nothing to compare it to.

Hey London_Lady1,

You definitely don’t have anything to worry about! I measured 5 days ahead on my 12 week scan but like you, they won’t change the due date as it’s an IVF pregnancy. I’m now 38 weeks and my bump is right on the 50th percentile so completely normal! I had one growth scan at 34 weeks (because my bump was small) and baby was measuring completely normal.

I know it’s hard not to worry about everything but there is no reason to worry about having a big baby at this stage xx

Thank you for the response. I think we just look for things to worry about! The sonographer just looked a bit socked and checked the dates when she saw the giant (7.5cm) baby. So good to hear that it evens out as time goes on. I think pregnancy is one of the few times you want to be in the average/normal box for as much as possible!

Congratulations on your super exciting news. Not long to go now!

Are you or your partner tall? I’ve been told recently my baby is long and skinny 😂 At 12 weeks, they are still using crown to rump measurements so it’s more length of the baby rather than overall size, if that makes sense!

Thank you! Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later, definitely hit that super uncomfortable point 🥴😂 xx

Hmmm hubby is just under 6ft (although he obviously told me he was 6ft when we started dating) so pretty normal height and I'm on the shorter side. I guess we will have to wait and see. I also know that at this stage I would prefer it to be bigger than smaller. I'll just have to wait and see how I grow the little bean over the coming months!

I can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like to be that far along! I'm just getting out of the constantly feeling sick stage and I'm looking forward to the heavily 2nd trimester when everything is magical apparently!

I hope baby makes an appearance soon so you can have lots of lovely cuddles. xx

Oh enjoy it! Second trimester is wonderful 😂 you’ll soon have a lovely bump to show off but can still put your own shoes on 🤣 xx

Same happend to mee! I measured 6 days ahead at 12 week scan so my due date changed. I’m almost 32 weeks now and having regular growth scans because ive got gestational diabetes and baby is measuring on 50th percentile so perfect, still a week ahead of confirmed conception date.

I was anxious about this at first but take it as a good sign baby is thriving inside you and growing well ☺️

Congratulations xx

Thank you for your reply. So comforting to hear that it's normal and levels out in the end. Seeing the little chart and being off it at the first scan was a concern!

Congratulations to you to, not too long to go until you get to meet them :) x

By my 12 week scan lo measured a full 7 days ahead and our due date was moved from 25th to 18th. He carried on along the 50th centile then throughout the pregnancy and all extra growth scans were all fine.

Thank you for the response. Apparently they won't alter my due date as it's IVF, but let's see at the next scan!

All hospitals work differently. I was dated a week ahead and my hospital did change my due date even though I tried to argue with them not to... To be honest it doesn’t really matter what your due date is until you get to conversations about do you need induction because you’re overdue (my hospital’s policy is they won’t let IVF babies become overdue, though not all are the same). You might find that they put the baby on a slightly larger centile and if it continues to be big then test you for gestational diabetes but there shouldn’t be any downside to being rwted behind where you think you should be.

So true! It's all finger in the air date until it comes to the end so I need to try and relax about things. As I said much better that its bigger than smaller! X

I had a Similar experience. My baby measured 7 days ahead of his due date. There was a time he was measuring 12days ahead of his due date. My doctor moved my due date earlier then expected.Im currently 35weeks pregnant and baby seems to be fine. With time the dates start to add up to the original date as you go along. i have been told baby is big but it is nothing to worry about. You should not be concerned .

I just saw your post and though its 19 days ago,I wanted to ask a question. I had ivf abroad and now I am 6 weeks pregnant. I have my 1st appointment with the midwife in 2 weeks and wondering if I need to tell her I underwent ivf or not?what is the benefit if I tell her or any negatives?

Firstly congratulations. Amazing news! Have you had your viability scan?

I would definitely recommend telling her. You want it on your pregnancy notes. Hopefully there should be nothing different in your pregnancy moving forwards to anyone else, but for example they won't question dates. Natural conception can be a few days here or there, but with IVF your embryologist was looking at it happening, so there is no question on fertilisation date. You don't then want them to change your due date to match the babies size and induce you early/late etc.

My hospital also offered me an additional appointment with the consultant to talk through anything. Apparently they do this as standard with IVF patients. I wasn't sure what else we would talk about so declined it. But maybe you want to have that appointment?

Also if you used a donor egg or sperm they will want to know that so they can track donor ages and medical backgrounds as this will determine risk levels for things like down syndrome etc.

Why wouldn't you want to tell her? I personally hate the fact that we couldn't do it the 'normal' way. I struggle with the fact that all our friends have 'had it easy'. But hey that's life. I've decided that I don't care what other people think. I'm not ashamed or embarrassed by having IVF. It's just treatment for a medical problem. Come March if I'm holding my little baby I just won't care how I got there.

Wishing you all the luck with your pregnancy xxx

How great you answered so fast!I haven't got my viability scan yet cause I wanted to see the embryo wich I read it's on 7 weeks. I still can't believe it cause I was struggling for years with my lining and had a few cycles cancelled. This was my last embryo and last ever try so I am so thankful. Just hoping now everything goes well. How is your pregnancy going?Thank you for all your comments ❤

It's tough, but so much better to wait until 7 weeks. It was torture for us, but seeing a heartbeat on the viability scan made it all worth the wait. So sad to hear all your struggles with your last few cycles, but you're pregnant now, and I'm sending you all the best wishes for the most boring and normal pregnancy possible.

Mine is going well. 16 weeks on Friday and I've really popped (probably because as the post mentions the baby is big!). We've booked a private gender scan over the weekend, so can't wait to see the little one again. I'm not really bothered about the gender as long as they are healthy, but can't wait to see the little wriggler again. :)

xx

16 weeks, whaoh! So are you going to ask what it is,or will you leave it a surprise? I think I would like to know the gender, not that it will make a difference as long as it's healthy. To be honest I am still in shock that I am pregnant that waiting for my viability scan doesn't seem long.I just prefer to see there is a baby in there so I don't have more stress if it's too early.Thank you so much for your wishes and I would like to wish you in return....happy rest of your pregnancy and enjoy every step of it,cause you're going to miss it when your baby is out x
