covid in early pregnancy

I’ve had two positive tests this week - positive pregnancy test (4 weeks and 6 days) and then a positive covid test last night. I only have mild symptoms (mild cough, slightly tight chest, sore throat). After difficulties conceiving and previous pregnancy loss I can’t help but feel anxious about having covid during pregnancy. Everything I read online seems reassuring (it seems more an issue in third trimester) but I’m still worried about whether it could increase risk of miscarriage or fetal abnormalities. Does anyone have experience of covid in pregnancy and how did you feel? Trying to stay rational here! Thank you 🙏

Hi! Congratulations on your positive pregnancy test! Sorry to read about the COVID one :( I don't have direct experience of COVID during pregnancy myself but a friend got COVID in the third trimester and was given blood thinning injections to prevent clotting. So best call your GP or 111 to get advice on the best course of action. It may well be different in the first trimester. My friend went on to deliver a healthy baby girl on her due date.

Yep, I caught it early on and was worried. To make matters worse I only found out I had it the day after I had the covid booster and combined flu jab, so I really panicked that I had done terrible damage to the baby during those first critical 12 weeks. But my GP said it would be fine and although I felt pretty unwell (which wasn't great combined with morning sickness) the baby was absolutely fine. Keep an eye on your temperature and speak to your doctor if you get a fever as that can be dangerous. Otherwise maybe look on the bright side, hopefully it means you won't get it again this year and your baby will hopefully be protected through your antibiodies too.

Hi! That must have been so stressful for you. I’m so pleased to hear that your baby was fine - congratulations! Definitely worth focusing on the positive for sure. Antibodies can only be a good thing! Thank you for your advice 😊

Hi, I’m sorry to hear this. But massive congratulations on your pregnancy. I’m 8 weeks today and also this morning tested positive for Covid. I’m now driving myself mad with worry. Like you, everything I’ve read is reassuring. Wish you better soon and all the best for your pregnancy. Xx

Hey, congratulations on your pregnancy! I’m so sorry you’ve tested positive too. I hope you’re feeling ok. I’m day 3 covid now, don’t feel any worse and my pregnancy symptoms are still the same which is reassuring. I guess we just need to remind ourselves that there’s no evidence it can cause a problem in early pregnancy and hopefully all will be well. Easier said than done though! Sending you best wishes for a speedy recovery xx

Thank you. I’m not feeling good to be honest. Just trying to rest & drink plenty. I’ve had to give in and take a couple paracetamol too. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was ill, it’s so unlucky that I get it soon after a BFP. Take care of yourself. Xx

Hi there :)

Sorry you’re unwell and congratulations on your pregnancy!

I had COVID earlier this year in my third trimester and was sick for a month. It definitely took longer to get over than when I had it before pregnancy. I told my midwife and they didn’t blink an eye and were more concerned with some symptoms I had at the same time that looked like cholestasis (it wasn’t in the end).

I purposely didn’t over-google as I knew it would cause me anxiety. Focus on getting better and distracting yourself with movies ☺️ Wishing you a quick recovery and a healthy rest of your pregnancy ✨
