Flying during 3rd trimester...

I am due to be flying for a shorthall flight to see family over the xmas period.

I am just starting to worry a bit about this....

Did anyone else get a letter from their gp?

I have no complications so far and it is only a very short 1 hr flight so doubt there is a massive risk of blood clots....

Wondering if anyone has any experience of this....

Hey lovely, I spoke to my consultant about this as we were hoping to go for a holiday between Christmas and New Year (we can't now for other reasons). Anyway we were looking at a 5 hour flight and I would be around the 24 weeks mark.. she said it was fine and she didn't see any risks just to get up and walk about a bit - I am sure an hour flight will be fine.

When I did some research I found some airlines wanted a 'fit to fly' note after 28 weeks - but only some so I would check direct with the airline xx

I have downloaded a form so will ask my gp/midwife to fill it out for me.

hey. I flew to a wedding in Scotland (so just 45 mins/1hr) at 33 weeks and was fine. Midwife said that for short flights they’re not worried, but I did get a fit to fly letter at my 31 wk midwife appt just in case. Have a good flight and enjoy seeing your family!

Ah thanks - spoke to my midwife today and she said it was all ok and would write the letter for me!

we flew to Italy at 28 weeks. So 3 hours. Flight was fine. I got a fit to fly letter from midwife and was asked for it by airline. You also need to consider how you will feel being away from your hospital. It did make me a bit nervous to be honest as my nephew was born premature but we has a fabulous holiday overall x

Hi Nat - yes this is also a concern, as I had to go to hospital while away during my first pregnancy.

We have a hospital closeby and it is my hometown.

that sounds fine! I was more concerned trying to find a hospital in rural Italy, being able to communicate with them and the fact they might not have the treatment a problem would need. If you’re in your hometown it sounds a bit different and should be fine x

Ah yes - I would also be worried in that case.

It is the hospital I was born in near us - so fairly familiar. Definitely not as good as my hospital in London though!

Update: In case anyone is in a similar positon over xmas holidays...

I rang the midwife yesterday and she she will issue a fit to fly letter going away but this wouldn't be valid coming back home! Isn't that bonkers? Now I am stressed thinking how the hell I am going to source a fit to fly letter while I am away xmas week 😞

Anyone else had this?

I am only flying for 1 hour...
