Try to cut down on starches to a low level and eat more fish and chicken. Nothing processed. If your Doctors are at odds of a statin it is possible you are not that high in Triglycerides try to see a copy of your blood tests and see what your level is and just how high they are.
I have seen the results, and they are high. One went to a recent symposium where statins were suggested. The other doctor says no.
So I dont know who to believe. I tend to lean towards the Gastroenterologist at Lahey, saying no.
But my levels are high and I just dont know what to do about it.
You need to cut down on starches. Examples are: eating potatoes, rice, bread, crackers, doughnuts and bagels. Cut out sugar and hidden sugars. For example, the coffee creamer that says sugar free on the bottle but has high fructose corn syrup in the ingredients. I lost 8 lbs so far by eliminating High fructose corn syrup and sweets and I cut down on starches. Whole grain is good and fat is ok. I switched from skim milk to 2% and use real cream in my coffee. There is sugar in milk but not cream. I am not sure if my triglicerides are still as high but I feel better.
I already do most if this. I try!
Yeah, me too. I also take vitamin e, flaxseed oil, a multi vitamin and d. I will have my first followup appt for blood tests soon. I read that vitamin e is good for the liver. NYLassie says she stays away from it.?? Fish oil bothers me so that is why I take flax seed oil. My doctor also recommended garlic. I add garlic and onion to a lot of things now. And I exercise more too. Statins caused problems for me so I am not taking them. Hopefully diet and exercise is the ticket. Good luck to all of us!
Fish oil supplements, regular exercise, and more soluble fiber in the diet help with lowering triglycerides. I have had 3 internists prescribe fish oil. A LOT of it. 2000 mg twice a day. I aleays make sure these supplements do not include vitamin E, which is someimes listed as mixed tocopherols. A minimum of half an hour of aerobic exercise a day helps lower triglycerides, as well as reduce fst in the liver. 5 grams psyllium powder in 16 ounces of water before each meal also helps. Adding garlic to the diet is slso recommended by my doctor.
I'm going to look at getting some fish oil. Any brands that you like?
Get the ones that are prescription only. I forget the name of the one I used for a few months, but I went from 1350-ish to essentially normal in a couple of months. I also quit drinking. My doctor could not believe my results!! I also eat a lot of flax seed meal, which also has a ton of healthy fats and fiber. Good luck.
My triglycerides were not high enough for my insurance company to pay for the Rx. My doctor told me to take OTC fish oil instead. The problem with this is that I have to take 8 capsules a day to equal the amounts of EPA and DHA in the Rx.
My insurance wouldn't cover mine either, but you can get a 1-month supply(four pills a day) for I believe $32. Just Google coupon for lovaza. I was getting mine at safeway. Again, with anything otc, you never know what you're getting in the "fish oil". Spend the $32/month if you can!! If it can help me as much as it did, it will certainly help you. Also, the prescription stuff is void of the purines that you get with otc fish oil that can cause gout.
Thanks. I too feel the same way about fish oil supplements. I have started to eat fatty fish a few times a week, and take 5 grams of psyllium powder with each meal, as well as adding a lot of garlic (both raw and black) to my diet instead of taking fish oil. I make the black garlic myself. ALA and GLA help with triglycerides too. I will see what the blood tests show in January.
I am on statins because I eat well (live on Mediterranean diet), I exercise at least 5 days a week with heavy exercise (7-10 mile jog/walk on hills)...and my dyslipidemia (cholesterol & triglycerides) and NASH does not improve. My doctors said these disorders may be hereditary (as they can be in some people) and LOW DOSE statin was the answer for me as things improved to within normal levels during one year's time. Metabolic syndrome is the basis for these disorders and the basis for a very high risk of heart disease if not controlled. Unless there was an extremely good reason for not taking satins-especially after a successful diet/exercise/weight approach didn't work (as it didn't for me), then I would try the meds as a last resort because genetics may be the cause rather than environmental factors like bad diet and/or sedentary lifestyle.
I have read that some low dose statins improve liver health. Depending on my next bloodwork results in January, I may talk to my PCP about prescribing one. My hepatologist will not prescribe a thing. I suppose that is a good thing, as I go to him because I am taking part in a clinical trial and I see him for free. Anything outside of the clinical trial would result in charges.
Hi. I have been prescribed a medication called bezalip mono for my high triglycerides. It seems to have worked by reducing my triglycerides and cholesterol to normal levels relatively quickly.
I was able to get a prescription for Lovata, 1gm a day. I took my first last night.
After 3 months they will test my blood to see the results. If its good and has helped, shell prescribe for longer.
