Well, it is like a lot of chemicals. Any uncommon molecule can have unexpected effects. There is debate about the artificial sweeteners but they are generally regarded safe. It is a good idea to remember that most things are dose related. The liver can detox a lot of different things but if it is worn down and ill or you exceed what it can do bad things can happen. No one can tell you for certain that any of them are completely harmless so it is a cautionary tale. Coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer. A person can choose to take the risk if they hate coffee that much or find something to mix it with that is acceptable. Drinking it won't guarantee you won't get cancer so like all of life it is a choice of risks.
