I have just been diagnosed with NASH and need to lose 130 pounds. I had lost 50 pounds on low carb and gained it all back feeling sorry for myself and other bad situations in my life. So hi all. My questions are about low-carb diet. It is the only way I have had success losing weight. Is that okay for NASH and are there any supplements I should or shouldn't be taking. Thank heavens for this group.

Hi Hawk
There are several ways to approach a low carb diet. We believe that eliminating sugar and refined carbs is the way to go if you are dealing with a liver issue. Your body needs insoluble fiber and resistant complex starches to be healthy long term. Going to a high protein diet puts an extra burden on the liver which likely isn't good. The answer from our perspective is a mostly plant based diet with a significant amount of monounsaturated fat and limited salt. Here is a link to our view of diets that might be of some help.

Can I ask how you were diagnosed? Currently going through the ringer trying to figure out if I have NASH or not.
I don’t know much about Nash but I’ve had liver cirrhosis for 3 years now and have lost over 30 lbs. I eat smaller portions (it’s hard at first but gets easier). Lots of dark green vegetables, fresh vegetables - no sugar, salt, or red meat. Good luck! You’ve got this!!
Hello,
You certainly came to the right place for sound advise and friends who truly care. I care. I have NASH Cirrhosis and it’s rough I must say. Knowing what to eat and how much to eat is critical to your long term health. Also what what to stay away from is critical as well. Below are some tips. Hope they help and you can reach me anytime for an open ear.
DO EAT:
Fish such as salmon (4-5 oz. three times a week)
Baked chicken breast (same as above)
Variety of meatless products
Whole grains rich in fiber
1/4 cup pure olive oil (daily)
Cruciferous vegetables
Fruits low in sugar
Avocados
Walnuts
Celery juice (pure)
Tofu
Pinto beans (not refried)
Eggs
Healthy fats
Wild rice (small portion)
Low-glycemic index foods
DO NOT EAT:
Red meat (large portions)
Commercial fried foods
Processed foods
Table sugar
Sugary beverages
Fruits (high in sugar)
Potatoes
Whit rice
White bread
Candy
Pastries
Liver detox drinks
Beer
Wine
Alcoholic beverages
Foods high in salt
Your enemies now are:
Booze!
Salt!
Sugar!
Hope this helps,
Harrison

Although much of the dietary advice here is good, there is simply no diet that will keep off that much weight. Have you looked into bariatric surgery? It is far more effective than diet and exercise at keeping weight off.
I wish I had undergone bariatric surgery years ago. But, I encountered all sorts of barriers, including lack of insurance coverage and opposition from my family. Now, I have cirrhosis and have been close to death from ruptured varices. I am no longer well enough to undergo bariatric surgery.
