I know that the liver can reverse damage to it. Can this happen with a fatty liver?

Hi, its a really important question. The liver can repair itself and fatty liver is reversible so that is the good news.

But your liver needs your help in doing that, it's important to do what you can to remove whatever was causing the problem in the first place.

So for example, if your fatty liver is partly due to too much sugary food and too little physical activity (which is the case for many people) you need to change that.

A doctor once explained to me that even though the liver can repair itself, each time it has to do that there may be a tiny scar.

These tiny scars accumulate as scar tissue in the liver which is also called fibrosis. So if you get more and more fibrosis eventually the liver cannot repair itself any more. So whatever stage of you get diagnosed, it's so important to not let it get worse, try not to make your liver keep repairing itself. You can do this by not putting a big burden on your liver.

The things that put a burden on your liver include being overweight, being sedentary or no physical activity, high sugar diet, low fiber diet, alcohol (of course), viruses like hepatitis C, smoking (yes smoking is very bad for your liver) and some medications.

Yes as long as it's caught before becoming Cirrhosis.
