What is the difference between NASH and Cirrhosis?

I know that with cirrhosis, the scarring permanent, but beyond that, I really don't see much of a difference, unless I am mistaken. Whether you have NASH or cirrhosis, you are susceptible to the same complications, right, liver failure, liver cancer and varices? They are both chronic liver diseases, to which no treatment exists? You can die from having both? What am I missing? PLease educate me. Thanks.

Nash can be managed with lifestyle modification. A diabetic person that good care of blood sugar ,obese who loose weight have better chances of improving metabolic syndromes. A decrease in NASH activity decreases fibrosis .Decompensated cirrhosis is different and the condition related to it can be managed but not cured

There are various reasons why folks have Liver disease - Congenital biliary atresia, Liver Cancer, HCV auto immune or infectious - NAFLD - NASH & genetic s/epigenetics.

Also external & internal factors that affect how sick your liver could become should it come in contact with an organism, or another sicker organ near by causing obstruction such as, gall bladder or pancreas. Many of us may have the same disease, got here down a different clinical path. We are all different. Me I only tolerate certain amounts of pain, nausea. Hate vomiting. The numbers and labs don't mean anything to me! I guess because I watched my father and my sister die of end stage liver disease and it's complications. My brother is in decline. Now I'm next. Can I reverse Fibrosis, sure I can. But Ive had portal involvement and F2 from a biopsy done in 2003. I've been HCV since 1979. I was not a silent C very sick HCV and my SGPT & SGOT we're sent out due to Kaisers' Lab could not count enzymes that high. The provider calling me at work asking why are my labs getting worse. Then she asked if I was resting. Said no, your calling me at work!

Hi Johnny

NASH has 4 stages, they just call stage 4 cirrhosis which was the historical term before they started grading the amount of liver damage. NAFLD becomes NASH when the damage starts to cause scarring of the liver. So stage 4 NASH and cirrhosis are the same diagnosis

Wayne, I saw a brief video of you on Google about you and your story. I couldn't believe it was the same person from this forum.

Not sure I know the difference either. My doctor told me my Cirrhosis can heal. With lifestyle changes, I’m feeling so much better. I use no salt what so ever. I eat fresh vegetables and fruits. I try to eat seafood especially fish and chicken, but about after two weeks I crave steak and eat it. When I go out to eat, which is not often, I ask that no salt is put on my food. I’m tested for cancer through blood test every six months and blood tested for white cell counts and bilirubin levels. And have ultrasounds for fluid buildup. I don’t know anything Nash. Good luck to you!

Nash is reversible withaltered lifestyle habits. Avoiding lchf diet alcohol and harmful chemicals to liver. True cirrhosis. Biopsy proved. May not reverse. You can at best delay it's progression
